Chapter One — The Structures Remember

At the end of the path, the Doctor and Raven reached the structures they had seen from the TARDIS. Beneath the walls, the scale of the place became harder to judge.
The scanner's dimensions had not prepared them for standing beneath the walls. They rose beyond Raven's field of view, their edges disappearing into the evening light.
The Doctor put his hand on the wall.
The dense material was related to the ground beneath them, but its surface carried none of the marks he expected from cutting or casting. The complex extended for four square kilometres. He could not identify the method used to build any of it.
He compared it with the building traditions he knew, then discarded each comparison.
He smiled and took out an instrument.
"The material came from below the surface," MINO said. "Processing has changed its crystalline structure. It is stronger than its composition would suggest, and it stores heat unusually well. These walls are releasing energy absorbed about fourteen hours ago."
Raven, standing a few metres away, had her hand on a different section of the same wall. She was not thinking about the material. She was thinking about the geometry.
"This wall," she said, "is not straight."
"No," the Doctor agreed.
"It curves. Very slightly — not enough to read as a curve from a distance. But it does." She took a few steps along the wall, keeping contact. "And the curve is consistent. It's not accidental variation. It's a designed curve." She looked at the next structure — the gap between this one and the adjacent mass of material, the space that existed between them. "The gap between these two changes as the curves resolve. At the far end —" she moved, checked, "— narrower. At this end — wider. The gap is not constant."
"The gap is part of the communication," MINO said. "Preliminary analysis: the spatial relationship between structures — angles, distances, the relative heights of adjacent walls, the width of gaps — is encoding data. The precision is consistent with intentional design rather than aesthetic preference or structural requirement. I am beginning to model the encoding system."
The Doctor looked at Raven.
She raised an eyebrow.
"You were right," he said.
"I usually am," she said.
"You usually suspect," he said. "It's not the same thing."
"It produces the same results at roughly the same rate."
He conceded the point with a small bow.
They moved deeper into the structures.
The sky's colours deepened as the sun disappeared. The walls remained warm beneath their hands.
They stayed in the structures.
MINO identified places where several spatial relationships intersected. The Doctor sat in one; Raven chose another, a little higher along the curve of the wall. The night was warm enough to stay.
MINO translated.
The Doctor suggested a starting point: treat the relationships as syntax. Where a line of writing usually presents elements in sequence, these builders placed them around a reader. MINO began testing patterns of angle, height and distance.
After forty minutes it offered a tentative reading.
MINO rendered it as best it could: Events are not singular.
The Doctor sat with this.
Raven read it from MINO's display and was quiet for a moment.
"That's not a scientific statement," she said. "It's a philosophical one. They're not saying 'events have multiple causal inputs.' They're saying something about the nature of events themselves."
"Yes," the Doctor said. "Continue, MINO."
It revised several terms as more relationships became clear. The structures dated from roughly twelve thousand years before their visit. Whoever had built them had been developing an account of time unlike any the Doctor knew.
So far there was no evidence of time-travel technology. Their methods appeared to rely on observation rather than journeys between eras.
The fundamental premise, as MINO translated it across the next hour: every event that happens carries within its causal architecture the full probability weight of all the events it almost was. The almost-events are not gone. They are present in the moment's structure as the alternatives it collapsed past on the way to becoming what it became. Every event is haunted, precisely and measurably, by its unrealised alternatives.
"That's the Raven Paradox," Raven said.
The Doctor looked at her.
"Adjacent to it, at least." She looked along the narrowing gap. "The Rani's analysis describes me weighting some outcomes against others. These people were asking what remained of the alternatives."
MINO said: "This is consistent with the subsequent translation. They are building an argument."
"Then let's hear the argument," the Doctor said.
The argument took most of the night.
They followed the argument from one position to the next, stopping whenever a new relationship changed the meaning of an earlier passage.
The civilisation — the Doctor began thinking of them as the Vorath, from an internal reference MINO found in the encoding; the word appeared to mean something close to those who stay to observe — had developed, across what appeared to be several generations of philosophical and scientific work, a complete account of temporal co-existence. The idea: time was not a single dimension with a single direction. Time was the accumulated weight of all the choices that had been made and all the choices that had not been made, held in a structure where both the made and the unmade continued to exert influence on every subsequent moment.
The Vorath had called the unmade choices the echo-structure. The probability weight of everything that almost happened. They had believed — and had developed observational methods to support the belief — that the echo-structure was detectable. That someone with sufficient sensitivity to the probability architecture could feel the weight of the unmade choices in the present moment. Could distinguish between a moment that had arrived cleanly from its causal predecessors and a moment that had arrived carrying significant echo-weight from the paths not taken.
Raven was very quiet during this section of the translation.
He remembered the weight of choices she had described inside the Engine. He waited for her to speak about the resemblance herself.
The Vorath had believed this was possible for a specific category of individual: someone whose presence in the causal architecture was significant enough that the echo-structure around them was dense. Where most people's moments carried a light echo-weight — the probability alternatives having been limited and quickly resolved — someone whose choices were causal pivot points carried heavy echo-weight. The almost-events around them were more numerous, more significant, more carefully maintained in the probability structure.
The Vorath had a word for such a person.
MINO translated it as best it could: the one the echo follows.
The Doctor looked at Raven.
She looked at the structures.
"They've been saying this for twelve thousand years," she said.
"Yes."
"In stone."
"In stone."
She was quiet for a moment. Then: "Does the Rani know about this civilisation?"
"The archive references brought us here, but none contains a detailed translation. I don't know whether she's seen them. Her work came from the Engine's measurements."
"The Vorath arrived at the same conclusion without the mathematics."
"Through generations of observation. The structures have preserved it for twelve thousand years." He looked along the wall. "We need to be careful about calling it the same conclusion, but it's an extraordinary comparison."
"There's something else, isn't there?"
"The Vorath were also saying something else," he said. "MINO, how much more of the translation is there?"
MINO said: "The encoding system has multiple layers. The primary layer — what we have been translating — is the foundational argument. There are at least three subsequent layers of increasing complexity. At current translation speed, the full primary layer will be complete within the hour. The subsequent layers will require additional analysis."
"Then we're staying until it's done," Raven said.
It was not a question.
The primary layer completed an hour before dawn.
Its conclusion treated the unrealised alternatives as active influences. They did not become events after the fact, but their probability weight continued to shape what happened next.
The universe, the Vorath had concluded, was not a record of what had happened. It was the living interaction between what had happened and what almost had. Both were present in every moment. Both were real.
The final statement occupied an eight-metre gap directly ahead of the Doctor. As dawn approached, light entered at the angle built into its geometry.
MINO translated it.
The event you are looking for is the event that looks back at you.
The Doctor was still for a moment.
Raven, from her position, read the translation from MINO's display.
She was quiet for a while after.
Light crossed the gap and spread along the opposite wall.
Someone had designed it to illuminate this part of the argument at dawn.
"What does it mean?" Raven said.
"It may mean that finding the event changes your relationship to it," he said. "The search and the thing sought become part of the same causal structure. Or it may be more literal. We still have three layers to translate."
"The stabilising constant," Raven said. Not a question.
"Perhaps. They're describing a general principle. The Engine gave us one example of a search that changed what it found."
She sat with this.
The resemblance was strong enough to trouble her, though she could not yet tell how far it went.
"The universe is very consistent," she said.
"The universe is very consistent," he agreed. "That is, as a general matter, both reassuring and slightly alarming."
She smiled.
They sat in the dawn light coming through the gap, in the structures that had been waiting to say this for twelve thousand years.
As the light moved beyond the gap, MINO interrupted. "Traffic on a temporal research frequency."
The Doctor looked up from the notes he had been making. "What traffic?"
"A summary circulation. Not directed at us — this is general network traffic on the main temporal research distribution channels. The subject is a newly published paper." MINO paused in the way it paused when completing an analysis. "The author is identified as 'R.' in the preliminary circulation. The institutional affiliation is listed as 'independent research.' The subject matter is: the temporal mechanics of a consciousness functioning as a probability-stabilising constant across multiple timelines."
The Doctor set down his notebook.
He looked at Raven.
She looked up from the translated passage.
She looked at him.
"The Rani's paper," she said.
"Yes."
An ancient argument lay open behind them. Somewhere on the research network, the Rani had just published a modern account of the same territory — and of Raven.
He wanted to know exactly what it disclosed.
"Get the full paper," he said to MINO. "All of it. When we're back at the TARDIS."
"Already queuing the full text," MINO said. "Estimated download time at current network access: eleven minutes."
Raven stood and brushed the dust from her coat.
She looked once more at the walls and the spaces between them.
They had only begun to read what was here.
"We should come back," Raven said. "For the subsequent layers."
"Yes," he said. "We should."
"MINO can't translate them remotely?"
"The later layers depend on relationships the initial survey hasn't measured finely enough. We'll need the full array here." He closed his notebook. "After the fold."
"After the fold," she said. "There's more here than one visit can hold."
"There always is," he said. "That's the best thing about places."
They walked back toward the TARDIS.
Behind them, the structures stood in the day's light, saying what they had always been saying. Patient, precise, oriented toward the dawn the way they had been oriented since the Vorath built them.
Waiting.

The TARDIS had waited at the valley's edge since the previous evening.
Her sensor array tracked the structures while MINO worked on the translation. Inside, the console lights remained amber.
The Doctor and Raven returned in mid-morning. After the night among the walls, they were ready for chairs and tea.
The TARDIS opened before Raven touched the handle.
MINO had sent the translations back throughout the night. The Doctor wondered what the ship had made of them.
He did not comment on this.
He made tea.
MINO said, from the console systems: "The full text of the paper is available. Eleven minutes and forty seconds ago the download completed. I have been waiting for your return before presenting it."
"Give us a few minutes," the Doctor said.
They drank beside the scanner. The walls across the valley could wait a few minutes longer.
"All right," he said.
MINO put the paper on the console's display.
The title was Temporal Mechanics of a Probability-Stabilising Constant: Observations from Gallifreyan Probability Architecture and Associated Causal Models. Under R., the affiliation read independent research. The Doctor could think of several institutions relieved by that distinction.
The abstract was two paragraphs.
He read the abstract twice.
Raven read it beside him.
It described an individual whose presence appeared to stabilise multiple timelines: a 'Raven Paradox instance'. The paper offered a mathematical model, supporting observations and the technical parameters of that individual's temporal signature. It presented these as a contribution to the study of causal stability.
The final sentence of the abstract: The ethical implications of this publication are acknowledged and have been considered; the author's determination is that the scientific value of full disclosure outweighs the risks attendant on partial disclosure, and that the temporal research community is best served by complete information.
Raven said: "She considered the ethical implications."
"Yes."
"And decided they were outweighed."
"Yes."
"The scientific value is real," Raven said. "Even I can see what a researcher could do with this."
"Is also a targeting system," the Doctor said.
"Yes. Both things are true."
He read on.
The paper proper was forty-three pages, with twenty-two pages of supporting mathematical appendices. The methodology section described the source material: analysis of a Gallifreyan probability architecture device — not named, not located, described in terms of its operational parameters and the data it had produced. The device had been monitoring a specific temporal signature for approximately two thousand years. The analysis of this monitoring data, combined with independent probability modelling, had produced the characterisation of the stabilising constant's function.
The characterisation:
The stabilising constant was an individual whose causal presence produced a consistent probability-weighting effect across the monitored timeline set. Not through deliberate intervention — the effect was a product of the individual's existence and choices rather than any planned temporal action. The individual appeared at causal pivot points with a frequency that exceeded statistical probability by a factor that the paper expressed mathematically and the Doctor translated, in his head, as essentially impossible by chance. The individual's presence at these pivot points weighted outcomes toward stability — not always, not uniformly, but consistently enough that the probability architecture could distinguish between timelines in which the individual had been present and timelines in which they had not, and the presence-timelines were, on measurable criteria, better.
The Doctor read this section carefully.
He had seen the evidence inside the Engine. Since then he had been trying to understand what it meant for her.
Now anyone on this network could study it.
She was findable.
Raven read the paper in full.
She worked steadily through the sections, asking MINO to explain the notation where she needed it.
She had spent weeks considering what the Engine had shown her. This was a different experience: her life described for readers who had never met her.
The paper made her legible in a different way from knowing.
She had agreed to the Rani's scan. She had not agreed to publication. The distinction made each exact parameter on the screen harder to read.
She was in the temporal research record now. She was a scientific phenomenon with a formal designation. The Raven Paradox instance. The probability-stabilising constant. Forty-three pages of precise description plus twenty-two pages of mathematics.
She read the section about the Engine.
The Rani had described the Engine's architecture with the fidelity of someone who had spent two days measuring it and who had excellent instruments. The description was accurate. The Engine's function, its probability matrix, the convergence point — all rendered correctly. The Rani had not named the Engine. She had described it as a Gallifreyan probability architecture device of unusual complexity, constructed during the pre-Time War period, designed to identify and preserve a specific temporal signature. The description was sufficient for anyone with access to the CIA's historical records to identify the Engine specifically, but it did not make that identification itself.
She read the section about the anchoring event.
The Rani had rendered it as: a subsidiary stabilisation event, in which a human-consciousness integration with the device's probability architecture produced an indefinite suspension of the integration threshold and established a functional alternative to the designed stabilising-constant integration. The consciousness anchoring the architecture is not the stabilising constant. It is a human consciousness of the appropriate temporal profile for the device's integration parameters, voluntarily embedded in the architecture as a stabilisation mechanism. The result: the device is performing its designed function — probability management of the monitored timeline set — without integration of the stabilising constant, preserving the stabilising constant's continued independent existence. The event is scientifically remarkable. The full analysis is in Appendix 7.
Raven stopped reading at this point.
She left the page where it was.
The Doctor looked at her.
The paragraph was accurate about the mechanism. It contained nothing of Yara standing at the control, or the Doctor holding her hand.
"She found it scientifically remarkable," Raven said.
"Yes."
"Yara."
"Yes."
A moment.
"The analysis is unusually thorough," MINO said. "It is likely to become a standard reference."
Raven looked at the display. At the section on the anchoring event. At the sentence the event is scientifically remarkable.
"She thought she was doing Yara justice," Raven said. "In her way. Documenting it properly. Putting it in the record."
"Perhaps," he said. "That doesn't excuse publishing it without asking."
Raven read on.
The Doctor read the paper a second time.
This time he marked each detail that could help someone locate her.
The paper did not give her location. This was, the Doctor suspected, deliberate — the Rani had made the calculation that location data crossed a line that signature data did not, and had declined to cross it. Whether this calculation was correct was a question about how difficult it was to locate a specific temporal signature in the full universe once you had its precise mathematical description. The Doctor's answer: difficult. Not impossible. Difficult.
More difficult for some parties than others.
For a temporal research team with standard instruments and the motivation to look: months of work, probably. The signature was unique, but measuring it required proximity, and proximity required knowing where to start looking.
The CIA already had a protected channel to the Engine. Publication mainly told them that others now possessed information once confined to their own records.
The Silence had tried to erase Raven's signature with an incomplete understanding of it. Now they had a detailed model. With their instruments, searching for it could take far less time than it would for an ordinary research team.
The Doctor closed the paper on the display.
"We can't undo it," he said.
Raven had finished reading. She was looking at the scanner — at the Vorath structures across the valley, patient in the morning light. "No."
"It's in the temporal research record. Every research institution that received the preliminary circulation has a copy. The mathematics are reproducible from the description — anyone who could understand the paper can reconstruct the relevant tools from it without the original data." He was saying it plainly because saying it plainly was the right approach. "What we can do is: move more carefully, monitor who is accessing the relevant research channels, and get to the fold before anyone who has read the paper and has the capability to act on it does."
She turned towards him.
"How long until the fold's window?"
"Nine weeks, according to MINO's updated ephemeris. The catalogue entry I quoted was out of date. I owe you an apology for those fourteen months of leisurely planning."
"And the Silence?"
"MINO," he said.
"Its first circulation preceded our receipt by several days," MINO said. "Given their attack on the Engine, I consider it likely that the Silence have already begun analysing it."
"Acting how?" Raven asked.
"Calibrating their instrumentation to the Rani's mathematical description of your temporal signature. Reviewing the probability architecture data the Rani described to identify ways to access it more directly than their previous approach. Assessing what the paper tells them about the Engine's current operational status and the anchoring event."
"They know Yara is in the Engine," the Doctor said. "The paper describes the anchoring event clearly enough."
"Yes. They can infer that Raven remains independent and that a human anchor is sustaining the Engine."
Raven was quiet for a moment.
"Check it against our records, MINO. Tell us which claims are verified and which are still models."
MINO ran the verification against its operational records and the Engine's monitoring data for thirty-seven seconds — a long pause, for MINO.
"The measurements agree within the instruments' stated precision. The architectural description matches our records. The long-term predictions remain conditional. The Gallifrey forecast uses the earlier 94% figure rather than the current 96.3%. That is accurate for the data available to the author."
Raven said: "The Rani is fundamentally honest when it comes to data."
"I know," the Doctor said. "It doesn't make this easier."
"No. But it tells us what information they're working from."
She returned to the author's defence of full disclosure.
"She thought she was doing the right thing," Raven said.
"She thought accuracy settled the question. It doesn't."
"I can understand why she did it," Raven said. "I still wish she'd asked."
They spent the remaining day in the Vorath structures.
They took their questions back to the walls, with MINO watching the incoming research traffic. Sitting inside the ancient argument made the new paper feel less like the only possible account of her.
MINO, meanwhile, had continued the translation work during the morning's reading. The primary layer of the Vorath encoding was complete. The secondary layer had begun to resolve.
The second layer addressed a reader directly.
MINO's first translation of the secondary layer, reached in the middle of the afternoon: If you are here, you are what we were looking for. We did not know what we were looking for. We built these structures to say what we understood, in the hope that whoever arrived at the right time would be the one who needed to hear it.
The Doctor read this twice.
"They knew," Raven said. She was sitting in the position that MINO had identified as the secondary layer's primary reception point — the place where the spatial relationships of the secondary encoding were most dense. "Not that it would be me specifically. Not in the way the Engine knew. But — they built these to be received by a particular kind of person. And they trusted that the universe would arrange things so that person arrived."
"Twelve thousand years is a long time to trust that the universe will arrange things," the Doctor said.
"They were right."
The Doctor looked along the empty spaces between the walls. Someone had built them hoping another mind would find them useful. Raven was finding them useful now.
He could accept that without deciding the builders had foreseen her.
The timing still moved him.
The paper had made her easier to find. These old walls had given her another way to understand being found.
He was grateful they had stopped here first.
They left the unknown world in the early evening of the second day.
The next layer would need several more days of close measurement. MINO saved the survey and its unresolved questions for their return.
The rest was for after the fold.
The TARDIS left the valley as the evening colours gathered again.
"Course for the Mutter's Spiral?" Raven asked, from her position at the navigation console.
"Mutter's Spiral. We'll survey the approach before the window opens."
He paused.
"The paper has been out for several days. Whoever is going to read it carefully has already begun."
Raven entered the place and date. The ship accepted them.
The Doctor stood at the console.
He checked that the Engine's warning channel was active. Yara and the CIA needed to know what the paper disclosed.
Then he returned to the navigation display.
The TARDIS flew.
Behind them, on the unknown world, the Vorath structures stood in the evening light. Still saying what they had always been saying. Patient. Oriented toward the dawn. Waiting for the next arrival, whenever it came.

They reached the waystation ten days after leaving the unknown world: a week checking the revised orbital data, then three days in transit.
There were no alarms during those last three days. They read, ate and worked in the library while MINO watched the research network.
The Rani's paper was in the background of all of it.
They did not discuss it constantly. Its implications still interrupted other thoughts.
Raven set down her book. "She would have found the paper interesting."
The Doctor, at the primary console, looked up. He knew immediately who she meant.
"Yes," he said.
"She would have had opinions about the Appendix 7 methodology." Raven looked at the scanner — at the normal space transit field, the in-between of temporal flight. "She always had opinions about methodology."
"She would have found three things the Rani got technically right but could have expressed more precisely," the Doctor said. "She would have told me about them in detail. She would have been correct about two of them."
Raven picked up the book with a small smile.
"I have identified four points in Appendix 7 that need refinement," MINO said. "One requires data the Rani did not have. I cannot predict how many Yara would have found."
The Doctor looked towards the speaker. "Thank you, MINO."
"You're welcome."
Raven turned a page, then returned to the one before it.
After a moment, Raven said: "I miss her."
"Yes," he said.
"I know she's — I know she's there. I know she's watching and interested and finding the Engine's probability architecture professionally remarkable. I know all of that." She looked at the scanner again. "I still miss her."
"Both things are true."
"I'd like to visit after the fold. Just sit at the interface for a while."
"We will," he said.
The TARDIS hummed softly around them.
The waystation lay between two mid-Spiral systems, where three research routes crossed. Two centuries of traffic had worn its handrails smooth.
It offered neutral ground for researchers who needed to exchange data without trusting one another elsewhere.
The Doctor had used it across several incarnations. The arrivals administrator recognised him and waved him through.
He and Raven arrived as themselves.
No cover, no disguise. The Doctor had considered briefly whether arriving under an assumed identity was advisable, given the paper's publication and the probability that interested parties would now be watching for Raven's temporal signature. He had decided against it. If the signature could be detected, concealment would only work until someone ran a scan. Better to arrive openly, gather the information they needed, and leave before anything could be arranged against them.
The TARDIS docked at the waystation's external port. They went aboard.
The paper was everywhere.
He heard fragments of the argument wherever they passed: stabilising constants, probability weights, a phenomenon many had treated as merely theoretical.
The Rani had sent it to every major research channel.
Some researchers dismissed the model; others were already discussing applications. A few listened without contributing. The Doctor took note of those.
The Doctor noted the third category.
Raven, walking beside him, noted something else.
The probability resonance had changed since the Engine.
The amplification had faded, but she could now distinguish patterns she had once felt only as unease or anticipation.
The Vorath's term gave her a way to describe it: echo-weight. Around most people it was light and shifting, as ordinary decisions settled into their consequences. It said nothing about how much those people mattered.
Some people were different.
A woman worked at a peripheral instrument station.
Raven had noticed her soon after they entered: practical clothes, absorbed in a display, apparently another researcher.
But the echo-weight around her was not ordinary.
It seemed to belong to her, rather than to an influence imposed from outside. It was dense, old, slow to resolve.
Raven felt something like grief in it, though she had no way to verify the impression.
The woman did not look up.
Raven looked at the display the woman was working at.
The display was angled away. Raven could make out part of a historical atlas.
In the lower right of the visible section, briefly and clearly, was a coordinate designation. A world. Vareth IV.
The name meant nothing to her. She asked MINO quietly; a quick search found no entry in the standard records.
She remembered it and moved on.
The Doctor had not seen any of this. He was already at the far end of the research level, where he had identified the colleague he was looking for.
The colleague was Tereth, a specialist in probability cascades. He and the Doctor had read each other's work for years.
Tereth was the kind of researcher who had read the Rani's paper with complete attention on the day it was published and had not commented on it publicly at all. The Doctor had expected this. Tereth was also the kind of researcher who would speak honestly to the Doctor when the Doctor asked directly.
They found an alcove away from the main floor.
"The paper," the Doctor said. "What's the reception you're not saying publicly?"
"Two parties began looking for the signature within four days of publication," Tereth said.
"Two," the Doctor said.
"At minimum. Those are the two I can confirm. There may be others working more quietly." Tereth paused. "One is working through conventional temporal measurement instruments — survey teams, long-range scanners, the standard methodology for locating a specific temporal signature in a large search space. It will take them some time. The signature is unique, but the universe is large and you have to know where to start looking."
"And the other?"
Tereth lowered his voice.
"The other is not working through conventional methods. I don't know who they are. I know what they are doing: they are cross-referencing the Rani's mathematical description with every temporal event record in the accessible historical archive that contains any possible probability-weighting signature. They are not looking forward — they are looking backward. Retroactively mapping every significant causal event in the research record against the parameters the Rani described, trying to identify past appearances of the signature that would narrow the current search."
The Doctor absorbed this. It was an intelligent approach — more intelligent than the survey methodology, because it did not require proximity. If you could identify the signature in historical records, you could then model the signature's current trajectory rather than searching for it directly.
"What do you know about them?" the Doctor asked.
"They've queried every major event archive," Tereth said. "The sessions overlap less than I'd expect from a team, and the method is unusually consistent. I think it's one person. No current affiliation that I can identify."
Someone had turned the paper into a retrospective search. It was an approach worth remembering.
"What do they want?" the Doctor asked.
"Not the second. The first has been seeking ways to eliminate this kind of stabilising effect. That much I can substantiate."
The Doctor was very still.
"The Silence," he said.
"That's who I suspect," Tereth said. "I can't prove it from these logs."
"The second party," the Doctor said, "I can't identify from what you've described."
"No," Tereth agreed. "Neither can I." A pause. "But I would note: they are not looking for her signature in the current period. They are looking in the historical record. Which suggests —"
"They're not trying to find where she is," the Doctor said. "They're trying to understand what she's done."
Tereth nodded.
Raven appeared at the alcove entrance.
The Doctor thanked Tereth and joined her where they could see the exits.
"Three people," Raven said. "On the staff. Since we arrived."
"Tell me."
"The arrivals administrator, the atmospheric technician and the researcher by the east access. They're holding positions around us. Every time we move, one of them adjusts."
"Watchers," the Doctor said.
"Possibly people acting under their suggestions. They may remember an instruction without remembering who gave it."
"You're certain?"
"No. Something about the pressure around them reminds me of the Engine. Check what they're transmitting."
The Doctor looked across the research level. At the administrator at arrivals, running what appeared to be routine processing. At the atmospheric technician. At the researcher near the east access point.
Three possible watchers on a route he had chosen for its neutral status.
He had made a predictable stop. Anyone looking for him could have anticipated it.
"MINO," he said quietly.
"All three have sent short compressed packets since your arrival," MINO said. "They match a surveillance reporting pattern. I cannot verify the recipient from here."
"Someone knows we're here."
"Someone has known since approximately twelve minutes after you docked."
He looked towards the docking access.
"We leave," he said. "Now. Unhurried. As if we completed what we came to do."
"We did complete what we came to do," she said.
"Yes," he agreed. "That's why unhurried is possible."
They walked towards the docks at the same pace as the other departing visitors.
As they passed the instrument station where the woman with the heavy echo-weight had been working —
The station was empty.
Its session had closed. The display showed the station's standard standby screen.
Raven checked it as she passed. Nothing remained of the atlas.
Then she walked on.
She waited until they were safely aboard before mentioning the woman and Vareth IV.
The TARDIS left as soon as the doors closed.
The Doctor set the transit course for the Mutter's Spiral without stopping to recalibrate the plan. The recalibration could happen in transit. The moving needed to happen now.
"MINO," he said, as the TARDIS settled into flight. "The Silence's contact network on the waystation: they'll report that we were there and that we left. They won't have data on our course — the TARDIS doesn't broadcast that."
"Correct," MINO said. "However: given the Silence's access to the temporal research network and the specific nature of their current activity — calibrating their instruments to the Rani's description of Raven's probability signature — they do not require a course broadcast to track subsequent movements. If they can identify the signature in real time, they can follow it."
"How close would they need to be?"
"Based on the signature's characteristics as the Rani described them, and the standard operational range of Silence measurement technology: within approximately three light-years of continuous presence. Not impossible, but it requires sustained resource commitment."
"Which means they need to be in the vicinity before they can follow," Raven said. "Which means the waystation stop just told them which part of the universe to be in."
"They could infer the destination from my public enquiries about the fold," he said. "The waystation gives them a current point to work from."
"So they'll go to the fold."
"They'll try to be there before us."
Raven was quiet for a moment. Then: "MINO: the fold's window. When does it open?"
"Seven weeks and four days from today, at the binary pair's closest approach."
"And if we need to be there before the window opens — before the Silence have had time to position themselves near the fold site — how quickly can we reach it?"
"Eight days on a surveyed approach," MINO said. "A direct temporal jump would bypass the measurements we need and could put us inside the developing distortion."
"Then we go early," the Doctor said. "Not to enter the fold — we can't enter it before the window. But to be in position. To understand the external approach and the topology before anyone else arrives."
"And to watch," Raven said.
"And to watch."
"The risk of a contested window is rising," MINO said. "The apparent surveillance, the archive search and the paper's circulation all suggest we should prepare for other arrivals. My provisional estimate is 67%, with substantial uncertainty."
"67%," Raven said.
"Yes."
"Better odds than some things we've done."
"Considerably worse than others," the Doctor said.
She gave him a brief smile.
"Set course," she said.
"Set course," he confirmed.
The new course appeared on the display.
Seven weeks and four days to the window.
Eight days to position.
Behind them, two searches were under way. One appeared to be hunting Raven; the other was following her through history. They did not yet know where the woman at the atlas fitted.
The TARDIS flew.

On the second day of transit, they returned to Raven's account of the woman at the waystation.
The first priority had been leaving safely. Now MINO had time for a wider archive search.
Raven described what she remembered.
The instrument station, the atlas, the old grief she thought she had felt around its reader.
Vareth IV.
And then: gone. Station clean, session closed, nothing left behind, departed before they were.
The Doctor listened without interrupting.
"Vareth IV," he said.
"Do you know it?"
He was already at the navigation archive — the TARDIS's historical records, the full catalogue of known worlds and civilisations that the ship carried as standard equipment. He ran the search quickly. "It's not in the standard navigation catalogue. It's not in the temporal research record archive." He paused. "It's not in the Gallifreyan administrative archive either. I have access to that through MINO's research network — the pre-War administrative records for the Mutter's Spiral region." Another pause. "Vareth IV doesn't appear."
"Meaning it was erased," Raven said.
"It could mean erasure. Or restricted records. Or a local name the catalogues never adopted." He repeated the search with variant spellings. "If a shockwave removed the world, its ordinary records might have gone too."
"Someone has records that the standard archive doesn't," Raven said. "Someone who was there when it existed. Or who has access to pre-erasure documentation."
"Possibly a rescue historian," he said. "Some keep chronally shielded source archives, precisely because the standard record can change."
Raven thought about the woman's echo-weight. The grief at high pressure, old, not fading. Someone who had been carrying something for a very long time.
"She felt as though she'd lost something. I don't know whether it was Vareth."
"The second party," the Doctor said.
Raven looked at him.
"Tereth thought one person was searching the old event archives. If someone wanted to restore an erased world, the Rani's model might suggest a way to anchor it. They'd need to test the historical evidence first."
Raven was very still for a moment.
"You think she was studying me?"
"It's one possibility. We don't know that she's Tereth's researcher, or that the world was erased. But the overlap is worth checking."
Raven said: "She left before we did."
"Perhaps she'd finished. Perhaps she saw the watchers too."
They had a name to search and an impression neither could verify. It was a beginning, not an answer.
"File it," Raven said. "For now."
"Filed," the Doctor agreed. "We'll know more when we know more."
He saved the search results alongside Tereth's account.
MINO had been running the probability analysis since the waystation.
The first estimate had used little data. Now MINO compared it with network traffic, known Silence methods and the fold's projected conditions.
MINO presented the full analysis at the Doctor's request on the second day of transit.
"The estimate remains highly uncertain," MINO said. "The apparent Silence operation is the immediate concern. The unidentified researcher may represent a different risk: a goal that requires Raven's presence, whether or not she agrees to it."
"Interference how?" the Doctor asked.
"They could arrange circumstances in which refusing cooperation becomes difficult. That would matter even if they did not intend physical harm."
"So we don't know what they would be willing to do."
"Correct. We have not established their identity or intentions."
The Doctor closed the archive search.
"The Silence are the immediate threat," the Doctor said. "They are actively working against us. The second party is an unknown that requires monitoring but is not currently acting against us." He looked at MINO's display. "That's the priority order."
"Correct," MINO said. "I would note: the fold itself is also an unknown that requires monitoring. My models of the fold's interior are based entirely on external observation and published theoretical work. The fold has never been entered and documented. What the fold contains — what its interior architecture produces for people who enter it — is not currently in any database I can access."
"That's the point of going," Raven said.
"Yes," MINO said. "I am noting it as a category of unknown that should be held alongside the known threats rather than separately from them."
He added the fold's unknown interior to their planning list.
He contacted the Engine on the third day of transit.
The CIA relay was operating ahead of the first quarterly visit. Its translations had improved as the Engine learned to carry Yara's responses, though pauses and ambiguities remained.
MINO opened the relay.
The Doctor said: "Yara. We need to talk about the fold."
Raven watched the incoming signal while the translation formed.
MINO translated: "She is aware of the paper. She has been monitoring the temporal research channels since the paper was published — the Engine's probability monitoring architecture includes those channels. She describes the Silence's current activity level as: elevated, not yet critical. Her phrasing: 'They're planning. Not yet moving.'"
"That tracks with what we found at the waystation," the Doctor said. "Watchers in place, calibrating instruments. The active operation hasn't begun."
The relay carried a response that took longer to translate.
MINO said: "She has been monitoring the fold."
The Doctor's attention sharpened. "What about it?"
Another translation. MINO, after a pause: "The fold's external appearance — as it presents to normal-space sensors and observation — is consistent with the published theoretical description. The fold's internal architecture — as it is visible from the Engine's probability monitoring — is not fully consistent with the external presentation."
The Doctor was very still.
"The Engine can see inside the fold?" Raven said.
"Parts of its probability structure," MINO translated. "At poor resolution. There are layers not visible in the ordinary external readings."
"Something or someone," the Doctor said.
Another translation. Longer.
MINO: "She cannot identify it precisely through the monitoring architecture. The fold's reversed causal flow creates interference in the probability signal that reduces resolution at close range. What she can tell: there is a probability signature inside the fold that has been there for longer than three years. It is not the signature of the fold itself — it is an additional signature, separate from the fold's natural architecture." A pause. "She says: 'Be careful with the fold. The fold is not only what it looks like from outside.'"
The Doctor looked at Raven.
She looked back at him.
"A person? In there for three years?"
"Possibly. Reversed causal flow could hide them from the normal sensors. We need to know more."
"Who?"
"Someone may have found an earlier, less stable way in."
He reviewed the published attempts. There was no documented return from the interior. Time inside need not pass at the same rate as time outside; even a short expedition could become a long absence.
"Does the signature indicate they're alive?" Raven asked.
"Yes," MINO confirmed. "The probability signature is consistent with an active living consciousness. Not distressed — the signature quality does not indicate acute danger. But present. Continuing."
She thought of someone making a life inside the distortion, with no way to tell the people outside what had happened.
"We go in for them too," she said.
"Yes," the Doctor agreed. "We do."
He thanked Yara through the relay. The translation of her response: she would continue monitoring. If the probability signature changed — if the person inside the fold showed signs of acute distress, or if the fold's architecture shifted — she would notify through the relay immediately. She had the channel. She would watch.
"She would," Raven said, after MINO relayed this. Quietly.
"Yes," the Doctor said.
The relay closed. Five days of approach remained, and a little over seven weeks until the opening.
They reached the Mutter's Spiral on the eighth day of transit.
The two stars appeared on long-range sensors. Their approaching orbit distorted the space between them into the shape he had been studying.
The entry zone was not yet stable or optically visible. MINO rendered the gravitational field instead, using the sensor configuration they had prepared during transit.
"It's beautiful," Raven said. She was at the scanner, looking at MINO's topographical rendering — the gravitational field visualised in false colour, the specific warping of space around the two stars. "Even before it opens. Even just the shape of what it will be."
"Gravitational topology is always beautiful," he said, comparing the measurements with the model. Six weeks and three days remained.
"That's a suspiciously broad statement," Raven said.
"I've been studying gravitational topology for several centuries."
"And in all that time you haven't found any that wasn't beautiful?"
"Neutron-star mergers can be more alarming than beautiful." He looked back at the screen. "This one is beautiful."
She smiled at him.
He placed the TARDIS at a screened monitoring point calculated from the new survey. A determined search could find them, but casual traffic would not.
MINO confirmed the positioning and began the formal monitoring log.
"Six weeks and three days," Raven said.
"Then we go in," the Doctor confirmed.
"And whatever is inside — "
"We'll find out when we're inside."
She nodded and checked their survey plan.
On the screen, the field changed by a small increment as the stars continued their approach.
MINO said: "Monitoring commenced. I will maintain continuous coverage of the fold site, the surrounding topology, and the probability signature inside the fold. I will notify immediately if any of these change significantly."
"Thank you, MINO," Raven said.
"You're welcome," MINO said.
The TARDIS held her position in the binary pair's gravitational shadow.
The fold waited.
They waited with it.

The fold changed slowly as the binary pair approached.
MINO's models dated its formation to roughly four thousand years earlier. Since then, the changing orbit had opened and closed access to the region of reversed causal flow.
The Doctor was delighted to have time to watch it.
He designed the analyses while MINO maintained the survey. Previous researchers had made brief passes; they could follow one fold continuously as it approached its opening.
"You're enjoying this," Raven said. It was not a question. It was the observation of someone who had been watching a person do something they found genuinely absorbing for eleven days.
"I've wanted to do this for years. The published models infer the boundary from its effects. We're measuring those effects continuously. Look at the detail."
"You said 'exceptional' the way other people say 'extraordinary gift.'"
"It is a gift. The boundary has gradients the theory treats as negligible. They aren't. We may have to rewrite the standard model."
"That is the face," Raven said. "That's the face I've been waiting to see. That's the one that means we're in the right place."
He looked at her.
"What face?"
"The 'slightly manic' face," she said. "The one that comes out when you're doing something you've been meaning to do for a century and it's better than you expected."
He returned to his instruments. "I am entirely in control."
"You are," she agreed. "And it's 'slightly manic.' Both things are true."
MINO said: "For the record: the Doctor's heart rate is elevated by 14% above his standard operational baseline. This is consistent with the engagement profile he displays during high-interest research activities. I would not characterise this as a concern."
"Thank you, MINO," the Doctor said.
"You're welcome," MINO said.
She returned to her book, smiling.
The question arrived in the second week.
Raven had read the paper again, asking MINO about the model rather than the threat it posed.
She closed the display and looked at the survey.
"Does it feel different?" she said.
The Doctor looked up from the instruments.
"Making choices," she said. "Knowing what the Rani's paper says I am — knowing the probability-weighting function, the stabilising-constant orientation, all of it — does that change what it feels like to make an ordinary choice?"
He set his instrument down.
"Tell me what you're actually asking," he said.
She looked at the paper on the console. "The Rani's description makes it sound like every choice I make is weighted toward specific outcomes. Toward causal stability. Like there's an external force operating through me — something I'm a conduit for rather than the person actually making the choice." She paused. "I know that's not what the Rani is saying technically. But it reads that way. It reads like the choices aren't entirely mine."
The Doctor was quiet for a moment.
He had asked himself the same question without knowing how to raise it with her.
"The paper measures outcomes. It can't tell us exactly what choosing feels like from inside. Nothing we've found shows an external command directing you. Your character is part of what the model is measuring, not something it has replaced."
Raven was quiet for a moment.
"The Vorath," she said.
"Yes."
"'The one the echo follows.' Not 'the one the echo controls.'"
"That's the distinction. The Rani documented an effect. She hasn't given a complete account of the person producing it."
Raven closed the paper.
"Good," she said. Simply.
"Good," he agreed.
MINO left the display on the live survey.
Near the end of the third week, MINO flagged a change in the research traffic.
"The access pattern I identified at the waystation," MINO said. "The single individual accessing the historical event archive retroactively. They have shifted their research focus."
The Doctor looked up from the fold topology display. "From the probability-weighting historical record?"
"From the probability-weighting historical record to the fold's published research record. Specifically: they have accessed every published paper on this fold's gravitational architecture over the past six days. The access is systematic — chronologically ordered, beginning with the earliest theoretical work and moving forward through the publication history to the most recent external observation data."
"They're studying the fold," Raven said.
"The external approach, specifically," MINO said. "They are concentrating on entry geometry. That may mean they already have an interior model, but the logs alone cannot establish it."
The Doctor sat back from the instruments.
He compared the new queries with the earlier search.
The fold appeared to be part of the same project.
"They think the fold can do something for them," he said. "Something that requires understanding the entry approach."
"And first they studied my effect on probability," Raven said. "They may be connecting the two."
"They're connecting the two," the Doctor confirmed. "The fold's reversed causal architecture — what happens inside it, the way probability runs in both directions — and the stabilising-constant function, which orients probability toward certain outcomes." He was working through it. "Someone believes that putting those two things together produces something. A capability. A mechanism for —"
He stopped.
"For what?" Raven said.
"I don't know yet." He was honest about this. "But they have a specific goal that they believe requires both the fold and you. In combination. And they're doing the preparation work." He looked at her. "Quietly. Alone. Not announcing themselves. Not approaching us directly."
"Not yet," Raven said.
"Not yet," he agreed.
Vareth IV remained a possible explanation. He kept it marked as a hypothesis.
He returned to the fold topology. He made a note in the operational log: second party has shifted research focus to fold approach geometry. Likely this party intends to use the fold as a mechanism in conjunction with the stabilising-constant function. Goal unknown but specific. Monitor.
MINO added: No arrival matching this researcher's known activity has been detected. Absence from the monitored site is not confirmed.
A little over three weeks remained.
Earlier that week, another arrival had drawn their attention: a vessel approaching under concealment.
It kept to a dense part of the accretion disc, where radiation and moving material complicated the readings.
Three weeks of measurements gave MINO a baseline accurate enough to distinguish the approach from that background.
MINO said: "Contact. Gravitational anomaly consistent with a vessel of small to medium mass, moving in a non-ballistic pattern. The pattern is inconsistent with natural gravitational motion. The vessel is maintaining a constant angular relationship to the fold site rather than following the natural gravitational gradient. This is consistent with intentional approach."
The Doctor was at the sensor console immediately. "Position?"
"Bearing 237, elevation minus 14. Currently in the accretion disc's shadow. Moving at approximately 0.003% of light speed — very slow. They are not in a hurry."
"Keeping their disturbance small," the Doctor said. He brought the relevant sensors to higher resolution.
"Not the fold's entry zone," Raven said. She was at the secondary display, running MINO's approach projection. "They're not heading for the entry zone."
"Sector F-7." He opened the model. The reversed flow came unusually close to normal space there. The boundary was thin enough to warrant a separate survey, though not an opening they could use.
"MINO," the Doctor said. "If someone wanted to influence the fold's internal architecture from outside — without entering through the entry zone — what would they need?"
MINO ran the calculation. "They would need to access the fold at a point where the boundary is sufficiently thin to permit signal penetration. Sector F-7 represents the only location in the current topology where the boundary thickness is below the threshold for — " A pause. "For temporal signal injection. A signal directed into the fold at that point would propagate into the fold's internal architecture rather than reflecting back. It would propagate into the fold's past — the historical direction of the reversed causal flow."
The Doctor was very still.
Raven said it: "They're not going in. They're putting something in."
"Into the fold's past," the Doctor said. "Whatever they inject at that point — from outside, without entering — propagates through the fold's reversed causal architecture into what the fold treats as its own past. Which means —"
"Then someone already inside might encounter it before we see it placed," Raven said.
"Yes."
"The person Yara detected could have been living beside it for years."
The Doctor looked at the sensor feed — at the small, careful, precise mass anomaly moving through the binary pair's accretion disc shadow toward Sector F-7.
"Can we stop them?" Raven asked.
"An interception would expose us before we know what they're doing. They could withdraw and return while we're inside." He opened the TARDIS's remote monitoring controls. "We'll keep a watch on this boundary after we enter. If they're preparing an immediate strike, we intervene."
"So we watch."
"For now. Document the signal and prepare a countermeasure."
Raven looked at the sensor feed.
She thought of the person inside, with no warning of the approaching vessel.
"They may have seen its effects already."
"They may know more than we can see from here."
He turned back to the sensor console.
The vessel continued towards Sector F-7. MINO compared its concealment pattern with the suspected Silence traffic.
The Doctor watched. Documented. Prepared.
The fold waited.
Three weeks and three days remained at that point in the watch.

The research vessel arrived in the fourth week.
MINO identified it before it reached the binary pair. The vessel that had visited Sector F-7 was already gone; this ship approached openly, broadcasting its designation.
"Meridian Station Secondary Survey Two," MINO said. "Registered to the Kaveth Institute of Temporal Probability Research. Their staff published several enthusiastic responses to the Rani's paper."
The Doctor looked at the approach vector. "They're not heading for the fold's entry zone."
"A point two hundred kilometres from the fold, suited to passive signature monitoring. Their transmitted instrument manifest includes a newly calibrated array matching the Rani's parameters."
"They've fitted it since publication."
"Apparently. Their likely target is Raven."
Raven studied the approach vector.
"How long until they're in range?" she asked.
"At current deceleration rate: approximately six hours."
She looked at the Doctor.
He was already running options. "We can relocate before they reach monitoring range. The TARDIS can move to a different position in the binary pair's gravitational shadow without being detected — at this distance, the movement would be below their instruments' resolution threshold."
"And then?" Raven said.
"They find us again. They have the signature description. They have the instruments. If we keep relocating, we keep telling them we're here by the fact of the relocation. Eventually they triangulate."
"Or," Raven said.
He looked at her.
"Or we talk to them," she said.
They docked at the Meridian Station Secondary Survey Two three hours later.
The lead researcher met them at the port. Beyond, an orderly workspace showed the marks of a team used to sharing close quarters.
Dr. Perren Osath was younger than the Doctor had expected.
"Doctor. And —" Their eyes moved to Raven, then to a display. "I understand."
"Do you," Raven said. It was not a question.
"Please come in," Osath said. "I'd like to have this conversation properly."
Osath led them to a table in the main workspace. The others withdrew far enough to give them privacy.
Osath began without preamble: "The Rani's paper is the most significant publication in temporal probability research in my career. Possibly in the past fifty years. The mathematical description of the stabilising-constant function — the probability-weighting mechanism, the causal architecture — is not theoretical. It's empirical. She had access to a machine that has been monitoring this phenomenon for two thousand years."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"That makes this an observable phenomenon, not merely a theoretical possibility." Osath turned towards Raven. "And you know what you are."
"I know what I am," Raven said. "I've known for a while."
"Then you understand why we're here. The opportunity to observe the stabilising-constant function in direct operation — not through archived probability data, but in real time, in a living subject — is —" Osath stopped. Reconsidered the word subject. "Is extraordinarily significant for the field. We're not here to interfere with anything you're doing. We're here to observe and document. Passive monitoring only."
She watched their eyes return to the readings.
"I intend to live my life. I haven't agreed to become your subject."
Osath opened their mouth.
Raven continued: "What I object to is not your curiosity. Curiosity is appropriate. The Rani's paper is accurate and significant and you're right that it matters for the field." She held Osath's gaze. "What I object to is the record you're creating. Your documentation of where I am, what I'm doing, the current state of the probability-weighting function. Because the people who will use that record are not you."
Osath glanced towards the instruments.
"The record is standard scientific documentation," Osath said. "It will be published under peer-reviewed protocols, with appropriate safety classifications where relevant."
"The Silence read scientific publications," the Doctor said.
A pause.
"They used the Rani's paper to refine a search already under way," he said. "A record of her present movements would help them further. Peer review doesn't prevent that."
Osath looked at their instruments. At the data they had been collecting since they arrived. The display showed Raven's probability signature in its current state — elegant, precise, exactly as the Rani's paper had described it.
"I understand your concern," Osath said. "I don't know that I agree with the conclusion."
"Raven has refused," the Doctor said. "The protections your Institute has agreed to recognise give that refusal force."
Serith's report had led to formal recognition of Raven's protected status after the Engine crisis.
The Council's reviewed order was now attached to the record, rather than resting on a field recommendation alone.
The Temporal Accord provisions that applied to a protected designation included, among other things, the right to object to unsolicited monitoring and documentation. The objection required formal invocation — it was not automatic, not self-executing. It required the protected individual or their authorised representative to invoke it through the appropriate channel.
Raven authorised the Doctor to invoke it on her behalf.

He reached Varek's operational network with the flat, formal precision of someone filing the correct documentation through the correct channel for the correct purpose.
Varek's response arrived within four minutes: the invocation was valid, the protections applied, the Meridian Station Secondary Survey Two was required to cease all monitoring of the protected designation and destroy any records collected since arrival. The response included the formal Temporal Accord reference number and the specific provisions under which the requirement was being applied.
The Doctor showed this to Osath.
Osath read it. Read it again. Looked at the display showing Raven's probability signature. Looked at the Doctor.
"This is legally enforceable," the Doctor said. "Not a request."
Osath checked the reference number against their Institute's agreements.
"Under protest," Osath said.
"Noted," the Doctor said.
Osath instructed the team to stop. With MINO checking the procedure, they removed the collected signature data from the active system and its instrument backups. The deletion receipt listed the stores covered by the order.
The Doctor and Raven returned to the TARDIS.
As they were crossing the docking connection, Raven said quietly: "They're going to write a paper about this."
"Probably. The case raises questions the research community needs to answer."
"And every temporal research institution will read it."
"And they'll know the protections have been enforced."
"And they'll also know we were here."
"Also that."
They were back in the TARDIS when MINO said: "The CIA communications channel has been accessed."
The Doctor looked up from the navigation console. "By whom?"
"An interested-party account received the case notification," MINO said. "Its access pattern resembles the unidentified archive researcher. I cannot prove they are the same person."
The Doctor and Raven looked at each other.
"Possibly the woman from the waystation."
"And the standard notice includes the incident location," the Doctor said. "Varek has removed it from further circulation, but the first recipients already have it."
"What did she do after receiving it?"
"No further network activity attributable to that account. We cannot infer what they did offline."
Raven looked at the scanner. At the fold's gravitational topology doing its daily millimetre of progress.
"If it's her, she may still be preparing."
"Three weeks until the opening. Anyone who needs to enter has until the window closes."
"We should be ready for her."
"And ready to hear what she wants before we decide what it means."
He checked the monitoring clock: three weeks and three days.
"I'm accelerating the preparation timeline," he said. "We need to understand the fold's approach geometry in detail before anyone else arrives. We need to know the Silence's operation as precisely as possible. And we need to have a complete plan for entry before the window opens."
Raven said: "Before we're crowded out."
"Before we're crowded out," he confirmed.
He returned to the instruments. Outside, the research vessel held position with its signature-monitoring array inactive.
The fold waited.

Anna called them.
Six days earlier, after the Kaveth encounter, the Doctor had asked her to search the fold's institutional archive.
He had asked her to look specifically at the fold's research archive — the full publication and documentation record, including any unpublished or grey literature that had been filed through formal channels. The fold had been theorised about for decades. There was a substantial body of work.
Now she had an answer.
She appeared on the display with a stack of notes beside her.
"I found an expedition filing."
"Tell me," the Doctor said.
"Three years ago a cartographer registered an experimental entry through a brief secondary aperture. It wasn't a full opening like the one you're waiting for. They intended to test the interior measurements. The entry was confirmed."
"And the return?" Raven said.
"None. The estimated return was marked uncertain, which was reasonable for this attempt. The time relationship inside the fold was part of what they meant to measure."
"But three years with no return record is an anomaly," the Doctor said.
"Yes. Three years with no return record is not standard. The cartographer is listed in the archive as missing, not deceased — a specific institutional distinction that means the possibility of return is not ruled out." She looked at her notes. "The cartographer's name is Davan Orel. Specialisation: temporal fold cartography — specifically, the mathematical characterisation of reversed causal flow architectures. They were considered one of the most capable practitioners in the field."
The Doctor was very still for a moment.
The name gave a shape to the signature Yara had detected.
"Davan Orel. They went inside to map it."
"The fold's temporal architecture would explain the three-year discrepancy," Anna said. "If Davan Orel's subjective experience inside the fold has been significantly compressed relative to external time — which is consistent with what the theoretical literature predicts for the fold's causal reversal zone — they may not have experienced anything close to three years. They may still be inside working, from their perspective, in the first weeks of the expedition."
"They may be alive," Raven said.
"The living signature is compatible with the expedition's baseline data," MINO said. "The match is encouraging, though resolution limits confirmation."
Anna looked at the communications display. "You already knew someone was inside."
"We knew there was someone," the Doctor said. "We didn't know who."
"Then this may give you a name. There's something else."
Anna opened the access records.
She had checked them after finding the expedition file.
"The fold's research archive has an access log," she said. "Standard institutional practice — every access to archived material is timestamped and attributed to the accessing institution or individual where that attribution is available." She pulled up a section of her findings. "I looked at the access log for the expedition notification section. I wanted to see who else had been looking at Davan Orel's file."
"And?" the Doctor said.
"Three days before you asked me to look, another account accessed this section. It read the expedition files in chronological order over about two hours. The registration supplies very little identifying information."
"Can you identify them?"
"Not from the registration alone. But the access pattern is distinctive. This person was looking for one specific thing — the most recent expedition record, the most recent entry into the fold. They went through everything to find the most recent. Which was Davan Orel."
"They found it before we even started looking."
"Yes," Anna said. "And the access pattern matches — " she hesitated. "This is speculative, based on network traffic analysis."
"Tell me anyway," the Doctor said.
"The access pattern matches what I've seen in the temporal event archive — the historical probability-weighting records that Tereth described to you. The same individual who was studying Raven's historical probability-weighting function retroactively has also been studying the fold's research archive. And now has Davan Orel's record."
A silence in the TARDIS console room.
Anna said, carefully: "They're looking for the same things I'm looking for. Just for different reasons."
"What do you mean?" Raven asked.
"The filing establishes that entry was possible. It doesn't establish survival — you've supplied the first evidence of that. But someone planning another entry would want to know how Davan reached it."
The Doctor looked at Raven.
Raven studied the access dates.
The queries followed a plausible sequence: Raven's effects, the fold's approach, a previous expedition. It was beginning to resemble preparation for a journey.
After the communication with Anna closed, the Doctor and Raven sat with what they had for a while.
The TARDIS held position while they read the expedition filing themselves.
"What would it feel like to stay in there?" Raven asked. "Whether it's been weeks or years?"
The Doctor thought about it seriously. "The theoretical literature describes the fold's interior as a space where every event is simultaneously its own past and future. You can see the same moment from both ends. Not simultaneously in the experiential sense — the experience is still linear, you still move through time. But the visual and cognitive field is doubled. What you see in front of you and what you see behind you are both the same event, from different directions."
"Long enough to get used to it."
"You might learn to distinguish the directions by experience. Things the theory only describes would become ordinary."
"You'd know things," Raven said. "About how events connect. About the structure of cause and consequence. Things you couldn't unknow after that long."
"Yes."
She looked at the fold's topology on the scanner.
"And the Silence," she said. "Whatever they placed in the fold's past — Davan has been living alongside it for however long the fold compressed three years into. From inside the fold, they can see it from both ends. From the moment of its placement and from the moment of its consequence."
"They may have seen effects we can't measure outside. We shouldn't assume they know the source."
Raven said: "And the second party knows that Davan is in there. Someone who has been inside the fold for three years, who has seen the Silence's device from both directions. That's — " She stopped. "That's valuable to someone who wants to use the fold."
"Yes," the Doctor said. Quietly. "Someone who wants to use the fold — who needs to understand its interior architecture before they can operate inside it — would find Davan Orel extremely useful."
"Useful or necessary," Raven said.
"Possibly. They may have practical knowledge no published model can give you."
Raven was quiet for a moment.
"Someone else may be going in to find them too."
He looked at the access log again.
"We should plan for that."
Eleven days later, one week remained.
The Doctor set their entry for six hours after the window opened, once the approach was expected to stabilise. MINO kept checking it against the live field.
MINO confirmed the entry configuration. The Doctor locked it in.
He called Anna back.
"We're going in," he said. "One week. I need you to maintain monitoring from the Institute — the CIA relay, the research network traffic, any developments with the second party or the Silence."
"I know," Anna said. "I'll keep the channel open. If anything significant changes — " She paused. "I've notified Cal. He's already watching the gravitational data. The Yara Constant is holding steady. If the fold's topology changes in a way that affects the entry window, he'll see it in the measurements first."
"Good."
"Should I notify Ava?"
The Doctor thought about this. "Not yet. If the situation escalates inside the fold — if we're not in contact for longer than the window period — then yes. Alert her and Cal both. But not yet."
"Understood."
Anna consulted her notes once more.
"The second party," she said. "Whoever they are. They're a historian."
The Doctor looked at her.
"The method looks like ours: recovering a sequence from complete records. It's not proof of training, but I'd take it seriously."
The Doctor said: "Does that change anything?"
"Recovery may be how they understand the project. Finding what was lost. That can become dangerous if they stop asking what a restoration would displace."
The Doctor was quiet for a moment.
He thought of Vareth IV, the missing records and Raven's impression of grief around the woman at the terminal.
Recovery, Anna had said. Restoring something that was lost.
"Yes," he said. "I think that's exactly right."
He ended the call.
Raven waited until the channel closed.
"What would restoring Vareth actually require?"
"It depends on how it was lost. If its absence allowed another history to form, restoring it could erase that history. We don't know enough yet to say whether that's the problem."
Raven looked at the fold on the scanner. At the topology, the almost-open shape of what was waiting for them.
"Then we find out. Together."
"Together."
One week.
The fold waited.

MINO compared each new survey with the model while the Doctor tested the navigation settings. Raven knew the sound of those checks by the third day.
He ran seventeen revisions, each using the latest measurements. Davan's filing offered a warning, but no tested route back from the interior.
Raven read.
She read fiction between their planning sessions. It helped her return to the calculations with questions she had missed the first time.
The photograph on the console showed Raven and Yara in the centre. Below it, in Raven's handwriting: She was here. She was glad.
On the sixth day she looked towards the relay display. "Yara's still watching."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"I wonder what she'll make of it once we're inside. Her view is different from ours."
"She always did like front-row views," the Doctor said.
She smiled and returned to her book.
On the seventh day, the binary pair reached closest approach.
The fold's entry zone stabilised.
Six hours and fourteen minutes into the window — the optimal entry point MINO had calculated — the Doctor was at the primary console running the final approach checks when MINO said: "New contact."
The Doctor's hands stilled on the controls.
"A vessel," MINO said. "Single hull, small. Approaching the fold site from bearing 041. Arrival at the fold's external topology: approximately forty minutes."
"Profile?"
"No match in our monitoring records. The Kaveth vessel left eight days ago. This ship is approaching openly at 0.008% of light speed."
Not attempting concealment.
Someone arriving openly. Alone. Not in a hurry. Forty minutes away.
The Doctor looked at Raven.
Raven watched the contact cross the display.
"The other researcher, perhaps."
"Forty minutes," the Doctor said. "We have an advantage."
Raven looked at him.
"If that's the person looking for you, I'd rather establish our position inside before a negotiation. We also have someone to find." He checked the entry settings. "They can still follow. This only gives us a little time."
"You're not going to talk to her," Raven said. Not quite a question.
"We'll leave an open channel. But I won't delay the safest entry we've measured to wait for an unidentified ship."
Raven looked at the approaching vessel one more time. Then she looked at the fold.
"All right," she said. "Let's go."
The entry was not like anything the TARDIS had done before.
She had crossed dimensions, parallel histories and the margins of paradox. This boundary combined those difficulties in a configuration she had never navigated.
She had not done this.
Forward and reversed causal flow coexisted across a gradient. As the TARDIS moved deeper, both became equally strong.
She crossed at minimum speed.
The Doctor felt his temporal sense divide. Memories and expectations usually gave him different bearings. Here both pointed towards the same approaching event.
MINO said: "I am receiving the same event twice. From opposite temporal positions. I am attempting to resolve which is which."
"Don't resolve it," the Doctor said immediately. "Log both. The fold's architecture isn't an error to be corrected. It's the space we're in. Both readings are accurate."
A pause. "Understood. Adjusting monitoring protocol. Logging both temporal directions as independent valid data streams." Another pause. "This is going to make the operational log significantly more complex."
"I know." The Doctor was watching the navigation display — the entry zone topology shifting as the TARDIS moved deeper into the boundary region. "How's the TARDIS?"
"Within tolerance. She normally resolves events into an ordered sequence, even while travelling backwards. Simultaneous opposed sequences are causing a processing lag. She considers this inadvisable."
"Noted," the Doctor said. "Tell her she's doing exceptionally."
MINO: "She is aware of this assessment and considers it insufficient."
"Tell her she's doing exceptionally and I will buy her a new navigation node when this is over."
"She considers this more adequate."
Raven had said nothing during this exchange. The Doctor looked at her.
She stood with both hands braced on the console.
"Raven," he said.
"I'm all right," she said. Her voice was steady. "I'm —" She paused. "The probability resonance. It sharpened."
"Tell me."
"Since the Engine — since the stabilisation — it's been at background. I'm aware of it but it's not dominating. It's been like — hearing music from another room. Present but not loud."
"And now?"
"Now it's in the room." She took a breath. "I can feel the alternatives around each event. Both directions at once."
"Is it —" He started to say overwhelming. He didn't.
"Not overwhelming," she said, reading him. "Dense. It's very dense. But it's — " She looked at her hands, at the console under them. "It's legible. I can read it. I just need a moment to adjust to the amplitude."
"Take the moment."
"I'm taking it."
Her grip loosened.
"The Engine amplified it by reaching for me. Here it's the structure of the place. I'm receiving more of it at once."
The Doctor was watching her carefully. "You're not alarmed."
"I'm not alarmed," she said. "I'm interested."
He exhaled. "That's both encouraging and somewhat concerning."
"I know," she said. She almost smiled. "I know it is."
They were inside.
The transition completed — the TARDIS reaching the depth at which the fold's reversed architecture was the operating environment rather than a competing signal — and the fold's interior opened around them.
A flash crossed the scanner and returned along a separate path.
The same moment visible from two directions simultaneously.
The same event appeared twice, one sequence advancing and one reversing. They were distinct enough to follow separately, but occupied the same field of view.
The Doctor traced one path on the display, then its counterpart.
The light went twice.
He watched for a long moment. Somewhere ahead, Davan had been seeing this without anyone to share it with.
The interior was larger than the external survey's kilometre-wide envelope. Stable regions lay between turbulent bands. Distances changed with the temporal direction used to measure them.
It was beautiful.
Raven leaned towards the scanner.
"Oh," she said.
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"It's like the Vorath were describing this," she said. "The echo-structure. The almost-events persisting in the architecture. In here you can actually see it. The events are carrying both what they are and what they almost were, simultaneously, and you can see both."
"Their argument gives us a way to think about it. We'll have to compare the measurements before saying it's the same mechanism."
"They would have loved this," she said.
"Yes," he said. "They would have."
The TARDIS moved towards the stable region. MINO logged both streams without forcing either into the other's order.
MINO said, after they had been inside for eleven minutes: "Signal."
The Doctor looked up from the navigation display.
"Cartographic beacon, approximately three kilometres along our present route. Its identifier matches Davan Orel's expedition equipment."
The Doctor was very still for a moment.
"Davan's beacon."
"Correct. The power history indicates sustained operation. It doesn't establish the operator's condition by itself."
"How long have they been inside?" the Doctor asked. He already knew the external time — three years. He wanted the internal time.
MINO ran the calculation. "Based on the fold's causal compression ratio in the region of the signal source — the specific ratio in the central stability zone where the signal is originating — the internal elapsed time is approximately four months. Davan Orel has experienced approximately four months of subjective time inside a fold where three years have passed outside."
Four months.
Four months alone. He wanted to hear how Davan described them.
"The signal is coming from a region that appears, from our current position, to be in both the past and the future of this moment," MINO said. "The fold's architecture places the signal source in a position that is temporally ambiguous from here — it is present in both temporal directions simultaneously. I cannot determine from this position whether we are approaching from the signal's past or its future."
"Both," the Doctor said. "We're approaching from both."
"That is technically accurate but operationally imprecise."
"The fold is technically accurate but operationally imprecise," the Doctor said. "We navigate it as it is, not as it would be more convenient for it to be."
He set the course toward the signal source.
The ship moved towards the beacon, keeping both causal streams on the display.
Three years outside. Four months inside.
Davan Orel was there.

They found Davan Orel approximately three kilometres from their entry point, in the region of the fold's interior that the Doctor's external models had designated as the central stability zone.
There the opposing flows ran closely enough in parallel for a camp to remain stable.
Sensor tripods occupied most of the twenty-metre clearing. A compact habitat stood behind them; data crystals filled labelled racks around the analysis terminal. Every array had been adjusted for the local topology.
Davan Orel was at the analysis terminal when the TARDIS arrived.
They looked up as the materialisation engines faded. Their gaze moved from the blue box to the two people emerging from it.
Then Davan Orel said: "You came in through the standard entry zone."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"What does it look like outside? I've been inferring the topology from internal measurements, but the reversal keeps producing a mirror model." They adjusted a sensor. "Actual measurements would be useful."
The Doctor looked at Raven.
She smiled at him.
"More than six weeks of continuous observations. MINO has the model."
Davan looked towards the open TARDIS doors.
"I would like to see it," Davan said.
"You will," the Doctor said. "But first — are you all right?"
Davan considered the question.
"Yes," they said. "I've been managing adequately. The habitat module is functional, the supplies were rated for twelve months and I'm at four, and the fold's conditions are consistent. I have been conducting the most comprehensive interior mapping of a temporal fold that has ever been attempted, in conditions that are, while unusual, perfectly navigable." A pause. "I'm aware that three years have passed outside."
"You knew?"
"I measured the ratio six weeks after arriving. I'd expected a few external weeks. The secondary aperture I used had closed, and I couldn't establish a safe exit from here." They checked a reading. "So I kept measuring."
"And?" the Doctor said.
Davan considered this too. "It is a significant practical complication. I will address it when I am outside. Inside the fold, it is simply a parameter." They turned back to the analysis terminal, made another adjustment. "You have the external topology data. I have four months of interior measurements that have never been possible before. Between the two, we can construct a complete picture of this fold. That is worth addressing the practical complications."
The Doctor understood the impulse to keep working. He still wanted them safely outside.
Raven stood beside the nearest array.
"This is Raven," the Doctor said.
Then Davan said: "Something changed when you stepped out of the TARDIS."
Raven looked at them. "Tell me what you noticed."
Davan gestured at the nearest sensor array — the instrument closest to where Raven was standing. "The probability topology sensor has been at baseline since I entered the fold. Stable reading, consistent with the fold's own causal architecture. When you stepped out, the reading shifted. Not dramatically. But measurably." They looked at the reading on their data terminal. "The shift is consistent with a probability-weighting source of significant amplitude. Something that affects the causal weight of events in the local architecture."
"You have a baseline from before our arrival?" the Doctor asked.
"One of several measurement tracks. The fold's reversed causal architecture has a probability topology of its own — the way the reversed direction interacts with the forward direction produces specific probability patterns. I've been mapping them." Davan looked from the sensor reading to Raven. "You are producing a measurable perturbation in those patterns. I don't know what you are. But whatever you are, the fold knows you're here."
"A recent paper describes it as a stabilising-constant effect," the Doctor said. "You would have been inside when it circulated."
"I don't have external network access inside the fold," Davan said. "I have been without external information since I entered." They looked at Raven with recalibrated attention. "The stabilising-constant function. I read the theoretical literature before I entered the fold. The probability-weighting mechanism was considered theoretical."
"It isn't," Raven said.
"No," Davan said. "Evidently." They looked at the sensor reading again. "The fold's probability topology is responding to your presence. The weighting function is active inside the fold. This is — " A pause. "This is significant data."
"Your measurements may help us deal with an immediate threat," the Doctor said. Raven nodded. "You can compare them with mine for that purpose," she told Davan. "Please keep them local. We'll discuss anything beyond that."
"What is?" Davan asked.
"Getting you out. And something that was placed in the fold's past before you arrived. You've been observing it."
Davan set down the instrument.
"Yes," Davan said. "I have."
They moved into the camp's workspace — Davan's analysis terminal and the data crystals and the instruments arranged around it — while Davan explained the four months of work.
Davan opened the interior map and explained the corrections they had made to the published theory. The Doctor followed each revision, adding the external readings where they helped.
The fold's interior, as Davan had mapped it, was more structurally complex than the external theoretical models had predicted. The gradient zones were not gradients in the simple sense — they were layered, with different temporal directions dominant at different depths within the zone. The central stability zone was not uniformly stable: it had its own topology, regions of higher and lower causal coherence. The external models had treated the interior as homogeneous. The actual interior was not.
"The most significant finding," Davan said, pulling up a display from the data crystals, "is the way the two temporal directions interact at specific resonance points. Where the forward and backward flows reach a specific ratio of relative intensity — here, here, and here — " they indicated three points on the interior map "— the probability architecture produces an amplification effect. Events at those points carry more causal weight than they would in normal space. Much more."
"Resonance points," the Doctor said. "Where the two directions constructively interfere rather than cancelling."
"Correct. The fold doesn't just run time backwards. At these specific points, it amplifies the probability weight of events. Whatever happens at a resonance point matters more than it would anywhere else." Davan looked at the Doctor. "Which is why whatever was placed in the fold's past was placed adjacent to the largest resonance point. Whatever it does — it does it at maximum amplification."
Raven traced their arrival route across the map.
"We flew close to that point on the way in," she said.
"Yes," Davan said. "Within its effective range." A pause. "I noticed your probability resonance amplitude shift when you passed through its influence zone. It shifted down. Not dramatically. But it shifted."
The Doctor was very still.
"The device that was placed in the fold's past," he said. "Whatever it is — it has a range. An area of effect. And the effective range covers the fold's entry zone."
"Yes," Davan said. "Which means anyone who enters the fold through the standard entry zone passes through its effective range as a matter of geometry. There's no path in that doesn't go through it."
The Doctor checked the boundary of the field. Every safe entry route crossed it. Whatever the device did, the Silence had arranged for an arriving target to encounter it.
"Show me," the Doctor said.
"That's why I was waiting for someone to show it to," Davan said. "Come and look."
Davan opened the file labelled Object: unknown placement, fold's past, resonance adjacency. Four months of readings appeared, paired by temporal direction.
The Doctor looked at the data.
Then he looked at Raven.

Davan indexed every measurement in pairs: the event approaching from one temporal direction, and its consequences receding in the other.
The data crystal labelled Object: unknown placement, fold's past, resonance adjacency was the most thoroughly documented item in the collection. Davan had been observing it since the third week after entering the fold, when the probability topology sensor had registered a persistent anomaly in the resonance point's neighbourhood. They had been measuring it from every available angle, in both temporal directions, for the remaining three and a half months.
The Doctor loaded the crystal at the camp's analysis terminal. Raven stood beside him; beyond the open TARDIS doors, the fold shimmered.
"From the beginning," Davan said. They navigated the display with the ease of someone who had spent months with this data set. "The initial detection: a gravitational and temporal anomaly in the immediate vicinity of the fold's primary resonance point. Not the resonance point itself — adjacent to it, approximately thirty metres toward the fold's past direction. The anomaly was not large. But it was consistent. It didn't drift, didn't decay, didn't fluctuate with the fold's natural variance. It was fixed."
"Fixed," the Doctor said. "Placed there deliberately."
"That was my conclusion. Natural phenomena inside the fold are not fixed — they respond to the fold's temporal dynamics. This didn't. I spent the first week confirming that the fixity was real rather than an instrument artefact. It was real." Davan advanced the display. "Second phase: characterising what the object actually was. This required approaching it from the past direction — which is the direction I could reach from the camp, since my position is in the fold's present relative to the object's location in the past. The approach was measurable without being physically close. I could take readings from the object's causal field at a distance."
"What did the causal field tell you?"
"The object is a device. Not natural. Manufactured. The manufacturing signature is consistent with a very specific tradition of temporal instrument making — pre-Time War Gallifreyan." Davan looked at the Doctor. "You would know the tradition better than I would. But the manufacturing signature, the material composition as inferred from the causal field readings, the specific architecture of the device's operational parameters — all of it points to Gallifreyan origin. Old Gallifreyan. Not recent."
"Pre-Time War," the Doctor said. "How old?"
"The material degradation signature suggests the device itself is approximately three hundred years old. The placement in the fold's past is more recent — approximately seven years ago, in external time, which means four years before I entered the fold."
Seven years.
The Doctor did not look at Raven immediately. He kept his attention on the display, on Davan's careful data, on the measured and documented history of a device that had been running in this fold for seven years.
"The operational parameters," he said. "What does it do?"
"This is where the reverse-direction observation was essential," Davan said. "From the forward direction, I could characterise the device itself. From the backward direction — from the fold's future, looking back toward the device's placement moment — I could see its consequences. What the device produces, propagated through the fold's architecture."
They advanced the display to the third phase of observation: the backward-direction readings. The device's consequences, rendered in Davan's precise cartographic notation, visible from the fold's future as a sustained effect in the probability topology.
"The device suppresses probability signatures," Davan said. "Specifically: it reduces the causal weight of probability-weighting sources within its effective range. Not eliminates. Reduces. A consciousness with a probability-weighting function — a stabilising-constant function, in the terminology of the paper you're describing — would, within this device's range, have that function significantly diminished. The causal weight of their choices would decrease. The outcomes their presence would normally produce would be less likely."
The Doctor was quiet for a long moment.
Raven studied the two maps. With the device active, the colours cooled and the gradients flattened. Some causal weight remained, but much of the variation had gone.
The Doctor said, without looking up from the analysis: "The fold's temporal architecture. When the fold closes at the end of the window — the gravitational interaction between the fold and the surrounding space-time topology propagates the fold's internal causal record into the local history. Whatever has been established inside the fold during the window period becomes part of the fixed local past."
"Yes," Davan said. "The fold doesn't just close. It encodes."
The Doctor traced the propagation on the display. Seven years of effect waited in the fold's past; closure would make that record permanent outside. The fold was the delivery mechanism.
"And the region the suppressor's effect covers," Raven said.
Davan measured the radius at forty light-years. A small region of the galaxy, but one containing inhabited systems. Once encoded, the effect would survive destruction of the device.
The Doctor looked at Raven.
She was still looking at the flattened contours.
The Doctor checked the intrusion record against the placement. They matched. The recent visitors had used the fold to deploy an older weapon seven years into its past. The paper might have supplied the final calibration.
A pause.
Closure would make the suppression permanent. Until then, they were looking at a provisional history. They might still be able to remove it.
Raven said: "It's been running since before Davan arrived."
"Yes."
"How long exactly?" She looked at Davan.
"Based on my measurements of the device's operational signature and the causal record it has accumulated in the fold's internal architecture: approximately four years before I entered. Three years have passed in external time since I entered." Davan met her gaze with the precision of someone who understood the weight of what they were saying. "The device has been active for approximately seven years, in external time."
Raven was quiet for a moment.
The Doctor watched her count back through their journeys.
Seven years.
They had visited systems within forty light-years of the fold. The display now showed suppression threaded through those visits. Neither of them could yet know how much it had changed.
"So everything I've done in the affected region for the past seven years," Raven said, "has been without the probability weighting at full strength."
"The weighting was diminished," the Doctor said. "Not absent. The suppressor reduces, it doesn't eliminate. You have still been doing what you do. The effect has still been present. Just —"
"Less than it should have been," she said.
"Yes."
"And I didn't know."
The Doctor shook his head. The Engine's monitoring might have read it as background variation. They would have to compare its records with these.
Raven looked at the display. At the backward-direction observation, the device's consequences mapped in Davan's careful notation. At the seven years of history that had been operating at reduced capacity without her knowledge.
"I've been less effective than I should have been," she said. "And didn't know it."
He wanted to tell her which outcomes might have been different. The data did not justify that. It showed interference, not a count of lives she ought to have saved.
The Silence had made a recent attack look seven years old. The paper might have prompted it or merely supplied the final calibration; the device alone could not tell him which.
What mattered now was that the harm could still be stopped.
Davan said, after a pause: "I've been thinking about what to do with it."
Both the Doctor and Raven looked at them.
"I've had four months," Davan said. "After I understood what it was and what it did, the natural next question was whether it could be removed. That question has been occupying a significant portion of my analytical capacity since approximately month two." They navigated the display to a section the Doctor had not seen — a different data crystal, its label: Object: removal assessment. "The device is in the fold's past. The fold's past is a navigable direction from my current position — it's the direction I've been approaching the device from for observation. Physical removal would require physically reaching the device's location in the fold's past direction. Which is — "
"The dangerous direction," the Doctor said.
"Not dangerous in the sense of physically hazardous. The fold's past direction doesn't harm the people moving through it." Davan's precision was careful. "Dangerous in the navigational sense. Inside the fold, the past direction is where causality runs backward. My instruments — my TARDIS-independent instruments — can operate there, but the navigation is difficult. The reversed causal flow creates specific interference patterns in standard temporal navigation systems. I've made brief excursions in the past direction. I know the hazards. But I don't have the capability to reach the device's precise location and physically remove it with the equipment I have available."
"The TARDIS," the Doctor said.
Davan looked toward the ship. A TARDIS could travel in either direction through ordinary time. Here, two opposing causal flows occupied the same route. Could she isolate one without losing her position in the other?
"She already finds the fold uncomfortable," the Doctor said. "She is, as she would want me to note, doing it anyway."
"Then the question becomes navigation," Davan said. "In the fold's past direction, standard temporal navigation is unreliable. The reversed causal flow creates the interference I described. Getting to the device's precise location requires a navigational reference that isn't subject to that interference."
They all looked at the problem.
Raven said: "The probability resonance."
Both the Doctor and Davan looked at her.
"Inside the fold," she said, working through it aloud, "my probability resonance responds to the causal architecture. It already sharpened when we entered. The suppressor's influence dampened it slightly when we passed through the entry zone's influence area — Davan, you measured that. The resonance responds to the causal topology." She looked at the display — at the device's location in the fold's past direction, at the resonance point it was adjacent to. "I can feel the resonance point. I can feel the gradient toward it. If the suppressor is adjacent to the resonance point and my resonance responds to causal topology — I can feel the gradient toward the suppressor too."
The Doctor understood immediately. "You can navigate toward it without standard temporal navigation. The probability resonance is a bearing that isn't subject to the reversed-flow interference."
"I don't know if it's precise enough," she said. "I've never tried to navigate by it deliberately."
"Four months ago I'd never tried to measure the probability topology of a temporal fold from inside," Davan said. "Necessity is an adequate substitute for prior experience."
Raven almost smiled.
"All right," she said. "I'll try."
The Doctor looked at the fold's interior through the TARDIS doors — at the reversed-direction topology, at the past direction that led toward the suppressor and the resonance point and seven years of the Silence's patient diminishment.
The external monitor put them eleven hours into the three-week window. Their own clocks had advanced much less: near the camp, nine outside hours passed for every one inside. The rate varied elsewhere. MINO kept both clocks visible.
Time enough.
If they moved now.

The Doctor liked this kind of problem.
He wished it had come without the weapon and the harm to Raven. But the navigational difficulty itself caught his interest.
Several incarnations' habits met in the calculation: caution, curiosity, the urge to test a solution before it was fully safe. He could hear the objections as clearly as the possibilities.
He laid it out.
He outlined their roles. Davan would chart the hazards, Raven provide the bearing, and MINO track their position. He would steer with the normal orientation system partly suspended, refining the course as they closed on the device.
"That's the plan," Raven said.
"That's the plan," he confirmed. "The question is whether we can execute it with sufficient precision to actually reach the device rather than an approximation of its position."
Davan said: "The device's location in the fold's past is fixed. It doesn't move. Whatever precision we can achieve in the bearing, the target will be exactly where it was when I last measured it, because it cannot have moved. Fixed position is one property of placed objects in the fold's past that works in our favour."
"Fixed target," the Doctor said. "Variable navigation. The task is: can we make the variable navigation precise enough to reach a fixed target."
"I can help with the variable," Davan said. "I've made four excursions in the past direction. I know the specific hazards. I can chart the route."
Davan brought up the excursion records.
Four excursions in the fold's past direction: the first a brief exploratory probe to confirm that the direction was physically navigable, the second and third to characterise the specific features of the reversed-flow architecture, the fourth specifically to approach the suppressor's position as closely as Davan's equipment allowed before the navigation interference became too significant to proceed safely.
Davan selected the fourth excursion, their closest approach to the device.
"The first thing you notice in the past direction is the visual reversal," Davan said. "Everything you see from the fold's present direction becomes visible from the other side. Events that you passed through on the way in are now ahead of you rather than behind. This is disorienting initially. After the first ten minutes you adjust."
The Doctor studied the sequence. Her systems could reverse a sequence; sorting two overlapping ones was harder.
"The navigation interference is the larger problem," Davan agreed. "Specifically: in the past direction, the fold's reversed causal flow interacts with any instrument that measures temporal direction. Compasses — in the temporal navigation sense — receive contradictory readings. The reversed flow is registering as forward; the forward-running residual from the fold's entry zone registers as backward. Systems that should give you a clear 'that way is forward in time' give you noise instead."
"Which is why the probability resonance matters," Raven said. "It doesn't measure temporal direction. It measures causal weight. The suppressor is at a specific causal weight location regardless of which temporal direction you're approaching from."
Davan confirmed the reasoning. They had reached the same conclusion in month two, but lacked Raven's means of sensing the gradient.
"I can," Raven said. "I think. I've never tried to use it deliberately as navigation. But I can feel the gradient already — since we entered the fold, the resonance has been responding to the causal topology. It's been pointing at things whether I wanted it to or not."
"The suppressor is adjacent to the primary resonance point," Davan said. "The resonance point is the single strongest causal-weight feature in the fold's interior. If you can feel the gradient toward causal weight, the resonance point should be the most prominent thing you can feel."
Raven turned toward the fold's past and waited for the competing pulls to separate.
She said, after a moment: "There."
She was pointing.
Davan looked at the direction she was indicating, then at their instruments. "Yes," they said. "That's the bearing to the primary resonance point. Within approximately two degrees."
The Doctor checked the instruments against her hand.
He grinned. She had found it.
Raven lowered her arm. "Two degrees is navigable," she said.
Davan calculated a search area roughly a hundred metres across. The device was less than half a metre long. They would need better precision.
"We refine the bearing as we approach," the Doctor said. "The closer we get to the resonance point, the stronger the gradient Raven is sensing. The precision should improve."
"Theory," Davan noted. "Untested."
"Everything about this situation is untested," the Doctor said. "Welcome to the methodology we have available."
Davan nodded. They had a method worth testing.
The TARDIS had to be configured for movement in the past direction.
He worked from first principles. The manual had little to offer about a space where both directions of causality occupied the same coordinates.
He left the navigational safeguards running but suspended the system that tried to resolve every reading into a single temporal sequence. In the fold, that correction was the source of the error.
"MINO," the Doctor said. "I'm suspending the primary temporal orientation system. You'll be tracking our position relative to the fold's internal geography rather than the standard temporal frame."
"Understood," MINO said. "I will maintain positional data relative to the fold's causal topology. I should note: this is not a standard operational configuration."
"Thank you, MINO."
"The TARDIS would also like me to note that she considers this inadvisable."
"She would. Tell her that every alternative is worse."
MINO relayed this. "She remains of the opinion that this is inadvisable but acknowledges that the alternatives are worse. She is prepared to proceed under protest."
"That's the spirit," the Doctor said.
Davan, who had been watching this exchange from the camp's workspace with the expression of someone witnessing something they had not previously encountered, said: "Your ship communicates through your AI?"
"She communicates in several ways," the Doctor said. "MINO translates the most precise ones. The less precise ones she communicates directly through the hum."
"She has opinions," Raven said. "Many of them."
"I've spent four months with nothing that communicates through a hum," Davan said. "I find I prefer it to the alternative."
Davan entered the console room and looked up into its height. After a slow circuit of the console, they found a place for their instruments.
"Raven provides the heading," the Doctor said, taking his position at the primary controls. "I translate the heading into navigation inputs. MINO tracks our position relative to the fold's topology. Davan monitors for the navigation interference and warns us when the interference is approaching the threshold that would compromise control."
"I have the interference threshold data from my four excursions," Davan said, from the secondary display. "I know what the readings look like when the navigation is about to become unreliable. I'll call it."
"Good." The Doctor looked at Raven. She was at the secondary console — the position she had always occupied, the section of the console that had become hers across twelve years of shared navigation. The console had adjusted to her, the way the TARDIS adjusted to the people who used her. "Ready?"
Raven found the pull again, beyond the ship, toward the suppressor.
"Ready," she said.
The TARDIS moved.
The deck shuddered. The TARDIS advanced reluctantly, correcting every few metres.
The hum changed frequency.
The Doctor rested a hand on the console. He knew that note: she objected, but she was still with him.
The fold's interior shifted.
On the scanner, the doubled landscape separated. The forward sequence faded; events they had already passed rose into view ahead.
The moments they had passed through on the way in were ahead of them now.
Visible from the other side.
He saw the route from the entry zone to the camp, each moment opening from its aftermath. Knowing what the instruments predicted had not prepared him for the sight.
"MINO," he said.
"Positional tracking is stable. We are moving in the fold's past direction at approximately one quarter of our approach speed to the camp. Navigation interference is present but currently below Davan's threshold."
"Raven?"
"Bearing is holding," she said. She was at the console, not looking at the scanner. Looking in the direction the resonance was pointing — through the TARDIS, toward the suppressor, through the fold's past direction. "The gradient is getting stronger. The closer we get to the resonance point, the more distinct it is. Two degrees is already less than two degrees."
"Refining," he said. "Good. Davan?"
"Interference is building but slowly. We have time. Continue at this rate."
The TARDIS moved.
The resonance bands unrolled across the scanner. Then the entry zone emerged beyond them.
The entry zone as it appeared from inside the fold's past — the specific point where the TARDIS had crossed the boundary between normal space and the fold's interior architecture. From this direction, from the past's perspective, the entry was still ahead. The TARDIS had not yet entered. In the fold's past-direction view, they were watching themselves arrive.
Davan said: "The TARDIS. On the scanner."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
Raven recognised their own ship.
The blue box crossed the boundary. Its arrival rippled through the causal field on the scanner.
They were watching themselves enter the fold.
From inside the fold's past.
"The universe," the Doctor said, "is being exactly as strange as it always is."
"Yes," MINO said. "I am logging both versions of the entry simultaneously. The operational record is going to require significant editorial work."
"Add it to the list," the Doctor said.
The TARDIS continued in the past direction.
The suppressor was ahead.

The TARDIS was unhappy.
The hum had settled into a low, persistent complaint. The Doctor eased the controls whenever she resisted; forcing the course would make the interference worse.
She understood what closure would do. Despite her objections, she held the route.
He kept one hand on the console, following her corrections.
"Bearing," he said.
"Still that way," Raven said. She was at her position, hand resting on the console, face toward the fold's past direction. Not looking at the console — looking through it, toward what the probability resonance was showing her. "The gradient is noticeably stronger. We're getting closer."
"Interference?" the Doctor said.
Davan, at the secondary display, checked their readings. "Building. Still manageable. We have perhaps eight minutes before I'd recommend slowing down."
Eight minutes.
The Doctor maintained their pace and gave his attention to the fold's interior, which was doing something extraordinary and deserved to be seen clearly.
The fold's past direction had a different quality from the fold's central region.
In the central region — where the TARDIS had first arrived, where Davan's camp was established, where the two temporal directions ran in parallel without either fully dominating — the visual experience of the fold had been the doubled vision: forward and backward simultaneously, both present, neither quite in focus without deliberate effort. A constant soft overlay of the same event from two angles.
In the past direction, the overlay had resolved into something clearer and more immediately legible.
Ahead lay the events that had produced their present position. Beside each, the fold retained its aftermath. The two views no longer blurred together.
Every event they passed through in the past direction showed them the full shape of its existence.
A distortion gathered, broke, and receded on the same patch of the scanner. He could follow each stage without losing the others.
"This," Davan said.
They said it from the secondary display, not looking up from their instruments but with the specific quality of saying something they had been waiting to say for four months. "This is what I came to measure. This is why I entered the fold. The full shape of an event, visible from its approach, its occurrence, and its consequence simultaneously. Not reconstructed from multiple observations at different times. Present. All of it at once."
They had set down the instrument they had been holding and were just looking at the scanner.
"I know," the Doctor said.
"I've been seeing this for four months," Davan said. "I have not stopped finding it remarkable."
Then Davan picked up the instrument again. There were readings to take.
Raven was experiencing the past direction differently from the Doctor and differently from Davan.
The probability resonance, inside the fold at amplified intensity, was not simply showing her the direction of the suppressor. It was showing her the full weight of every event in the fold's past-direction field — every moment's echo-structure, the accumulated probability weight of everything it had almost been, in both the approaching and receding registers simultaneously. The Vorath would have called this the full density of the echo. She was, in the fold's past direction, experiencing the Vorath's philosophy as direct perception rather than philosophical inference.
Twelve years of temporal bleeds had taught Raven to recognise a choice arriving with unusual weight. Here the signals separated. She could distinguish a moment from the alternatives crowding around it.
She could read the approach and the departure of every event she moved through. She could feel the resonance point's causal weight as a constant pull in the bearing direction, stronger with every kilometre of approach. She could feel the suppressor adjacent to it — not as the resonance point itself but as a specific disruption in its neighbourhood: the causal signature of a device that had been holding a pattern in the fold's architecture for seven years, a flatness in the probability topology that contrasted with the resonance point's density.
She knew where it was. Not approximately. With the precision of someone navigating by a signal that had been getting clearer for the past thirty minutes.
"Left," she said. "We're drifting slightly. Correct left by approximately four degrees."
The Doctor adjusted.
"Better. Straight ahead now. Two hundred metres."
The Doctor checked her bearing, then her face. He was smiling again.
She tapped the controls to remind him where to look.
"Davan," she said.
"Interference is at 60% of threshold," Davan said. "Slowing would be advisable at this point."
"Slowing," the Doctor confirmed. He reduced speed and the TARDIS adjusted her effort-frequency fractionally — the specific modulation of a system shifting from sustained effort to careful approach. "One hundred metres?"
"Eighty," Raven said. "And slightly down in the fold's topology. The suppressor is in a depression in the causal architecture — a region where the probability weight is locally lower. The resonance point is pulling from slightly above. Adjust the approach angle — lower."
He adjusted.
"Fifty metres," she said. "Forty."
"Interference at 80%," Davan said. "Reduce speed further."
He reduced speed further. The TARDIS was moving at something close to walking pace through the fold's past direction, inching toward the suppressor's position with the patient care of a very large ship in a very precise situation.
"Twenty metres," Raven said. "We're on target."
The scanner showed it.
A dark cylinder, roughly forty centimetres long. The Doctor recognised the alloy used in pre-war Gallifreyan instruments.
It was sitting on the fold's causal topology surface — not physically resting on anything, since the fold's interior didn't have a floor in the conventional sense, but positioned at a stable point in the fold's gravitational architecture where it would maintain position without support. The suppressor had been here for seven years. It would stay in this position for as long as the fold's architecture held its gravitational configuration.
Around it, the fold's past-direction view showed the moment of its placement.
From this direction — from the past approaching the moment of placement — the placement was still imminent. The fold's past direction showed events as they were arriving rather than as they had arrived. The suppressor's placement was ahead of them in this temporal perspective: happening soon, not yet complete.
And in the fold's future direction — the backward-looking component of the doubled vision — the placement was already accomplished. Seven years of operation, visible in the causal architecture. The flatness in the probability topology that extended away from the suppressor in the future-facing view.
Both simultaneously.
"There," Davan said. Not with triumph — with the specific quiet of a scientist whose measurements had been confirmed by direct observation. "That's what I've been watching for four months."
The Doctor looked at the scanner. At the suppressor in both its temporal aspects — the placement approaching and the placement accomplished, the device that had been diminishing Raven for seven years visible from both the moment before it began and the full span of what it had done.
Two Silents appeared at the edge of the placement record. MINO froze the frame and placed a written warning beside it: LOOKING AWAY WILL ERASE YOUR MEMORY OF THESE FIGURES. The Doctor read the warning twice, then watched them work.
One checked the position while the other activated the cylinder. The timestamp connected their four-minute visit to the recent intrusion at Sector F-7. They had entered now and worked seven years into the fold's past.
Then they left.
The suppressor ran.
It had been running ever since.
"MINO," the Doctor said. "The suppressor. If I remove it physically — from this position, from the fold's past direction — what happens to the causal record of its presence here?"
MINO's model showed that removal would break the device's hold on this position. The provisional causal record could still change. The suppression should disappear from it.
"And when the fold closes?"
Closure would then encode a history without the suppression. Their shielded records should preserve what they had found; the effect outside remained provisional until closure.
Raven was looking at the suppressor on the scanner.
The Doctor was looking at her.
The Doctor checked the prediction against Davan's measurements. They could still stop this version of the past becoming permanent.
"Yes," MINO said.
The Doctor reached for the scanner controls to prepare for the physical approach.
"Twenty metres," Raven said. "We're at the suppressor's position."
He stopped the TARDIS.
He looked at the suppressor on the scanner — small, functional, seven years of patient harm sitting in the fold's past, waiting to be removed.
He opened the TARDIS doors.
He stepped out.

Without the scanner to frame them, the two views filled his sight. He paused on the threshold until he could distinguish the surface ahead from its earlier position.
The Doctor had stood in extraordinary places.
This was among the most extraordinary.
He was standing in the past of a temporal fold, watching the moment of the suppressor's original placement from the inside of the moment before it happened, holding in the present awareness the full shape of what the device's seven years of operation had done. Behind him, the TARDIS. Ahead of him, twenty metres, the suppressor in the fold's causal topology.
He walked toward it.
The fold carried traces of events thousands of years old. He let them pass through the edges of his attention. Only the route to the cylinder mattered.
He kept his attention on the suppressor.
Fifteen metres. Ten. Five.
He crouched down — the fold's topology had a kind of floor to it, the gravitational architecture of the space creating a surface that the suppressor rested on — and looked at it directly.
He checked it for a movement trigger. None registered. The position itself held the device's causal coupling; lifting it should break that connection.
He picked it up.
The fold's probability architecture changed in the moment he lifted the device from the causal topology surface.
The coupling broke. On the scanner behind him, the flattened contours began to rise.
Light spread through the resonance bands. The cooler region vanished from Davan's map.
The Doctor registered this.
What he registered simultaneously: a change in what was visible through the TARDIS doors.
Raven was gripping the console.
Her knuckles whitened. The console lights dimmed around her, and the TARDIS steadied the deck.
He was back through the TARDIS doors in seconds.
He called her name.
She asked for a moment. Her eyes followed him. She was breathing evenly, but she kept both hands on the console.
The fold's amplification had returned without the suppressor damping it.
She had learned to live with the quieter signal. Now every gradient pressed upon her at once.
She held on.
He stayed beside her and offered to raise the shielding. She shook her head.
Davan watched the readings, ready to warn him if they rose further.
After seven seconds — which the Doctor counted, precisely, from the moment he came through the doors — Raven exhaled.
She loosened her grip on the console.
She straightened.
"All right," she said. Not as a statement of recovery. As a statement of assessment: she had checked, and she was all right, and the checking confirmed it.
"Yes," the Doctor said.
A moment.
"That's what it's supposed to feel like," she said.
She was looking at the fold's interior through the scanner — at the probability topology now fully restored, at the causal architecture of the fold running without the suppressor's diminishing influence.
"I didn't know I was missing it until it came back."
Davan said, from the secondary display: "What does it feel like?"
Raven listened to the new sensation before answering.
"Like being correctly calibrated," she said. The instrument sounds right now. You didn't know it wasn't right before because you adjusted so gradually you stopped hearing the difference."
Davan said: "Yes. That's a very precise description."
"I've been around a lot of precise people," Raven said.
She smiled, and the Doctor let his shoulders relax.
The Doctor put the suppressor on the console.
He enclosed the device in a field before setting it beside the scanner. The readings stayed quiet.
He examined it.
Gallifreyan manufacture. He had known that from Davan's measurements. The manufacturing signature was specific enough to be informative beyond the simple fact of origin: this was the work of the Temporal Instrument Division, the specific arm of Gallifreyan research that had worked on probability-weighting suppression technology in the centuries before the Time War. The Division had been a classified operation — most Time Lords had not known it existed. The Doctor had known it existed because he had, across various incarnations, run into the consequences of its work.
He had not known that the Division had built a device specifically calibrated to the stabilising-constant function.
He turned the suppressor over.
On the base: a manufacturing date, rendered in Gallifreyan notation. He translated it.
Three hundred and twelve years ago.
Three hundred and twelve years before its deployment, by the maker's own chronology. The date belonged to a pre-war production series. Someone in the Division had understood enough about probability-weighting sources to build this.
The Silence had obtained the old instrument, then used the fold to place it seven years before their own arrival. Whether they had recalibrated it for Raven remained to be established.
The underlying technology, at least, was older than this attack.
The Doctor thought about what that meant.
He checked the maker's mark once more before speaking.
"Pre-Time War," he said. "Gallifreyan, but old." He set the suppressor back on the console. "The Silence didn't build this. They acquired it. This technology predates their operation against Raven by at least three centuries."
Raven looked at the suppressor.
"Someone on Gallifrey built a device to suppress the stabilising constant," she said. "Before the Time War."
"Before the Time War," he confirmed. "Which means the Silence's current operation — the suppressor, the fold, the plan to encode the diminishment into the local causal history — is not something they developed. It's something they inherited. Or acquired from the ruins."
Davan, who had been following this with the quality of someone hearing the relevant context for the first time, said: "And the plan to place it here? The fold specifically?"
"The fold as a delivery mechanism — that's more recent. The fold's specific properties as a way to encode something into the causal history retroactively, using the window and closure mechanism." He looked at the suppressor. "That's their innovation. The device is old. The application is new."
MINO said: "The fold's architecture is currently clean. The suppressor has been removed from the fold's past. When the fold closes at the end of the window period, the suppressor's effect will not be encoded into the local causal history."
"Yes," the Doctor said. "That's the current state."
MINO paused.
"However," MINO said.
MINO reported that the signal had ceased. If the intruders had left an external monitor, they would detect the change.
"They'll know it's been removed," the Doctor said.
"They will know something has changed. The cessation of the suppressor's signal is consistent with removal, destruction, or system failure. They cannot know which from outside the fold. But they will know the device is no longer functioning."
"And they'll respond," Raven said.
"Yes."
The Doctor looked at the fold's interior on the scanner. At the clean probability architecture, restored. At the window that was still open — three weeks minus the hours since entry, the binary pair still at closest approach, the fold still accessible from outside.
"What can they do from outside the fold?" Raven asked.
"They have the external access point," Davan said. "Sector F-7. They placed the suppressor through it. They can place something else through it."
"Or something more direct," the Doctor said. He was already thinking through it. "The suppressor was a long-game device — something that would run without their presence and encode itself at closure. If they're responding to an emergency removal, they won't use another long-game device. They'll use something fast."
He looked at the console. At the suppressor sitting on it. At Raven, fully present and calibrated.
No activity showed at Sector F-7 yet. MINO could not predict a response time and recommended planning for an attack within two external hours.
The Doctor agreed. They needed a plan now.
He picked up the suppressor from the console.
He checked that the portable containment field held.
Then he stowed the sealed device in his coat pocket.
"We need to talk about the exit," he said.

The TARDIS console room held the three of them and the suppressor and the fold's restored probability architecture on the scanner, and for a moment nobody moved.
They paused to catch their breath.
The Doctor felt the weight of the contained device in his pocket. Its maker's mark troubled him more than its age.
The Temporal Instrument Division had possessed technology able to suppress what the Engine sought to protect. Had the two programmes shared research, or had one been built to counter the other?
Why?
He needed records, and perhaps someone still alive who remembered the work.
He didn't have the answer. He filed the question for later and turned his attention back to the console.
Davan checked the carry case they had brought aboard before leaving camp. The data crystals and portable instruments were secure.
On the scanner, the flattened region had filled in. Davan's maps agreed with the new readings.
Raven stood at the secondary console, testing the restored sensation against the display.
Seven years of interference in the affected systems. She could remember their visits; she could not reconstruct the choices as they might have been without it.
He looked at her.
She met his look and nodded.
MINO said: "Alert."
"Activity at Sector F-7," MINO said. "The external access point. Something is being directed into the fold's past from outside."
The Doctor was at the primary console in two steps. "What kind of activity?"
MINO identified a manufactured erasure pulse using Silence-pattern technology. It was entering through F-7, carrying instructions designed to alter the fold's causal record. The injection had also destabilised the boundary: instead of remaining open for weeks, the fold was now contracting toward closure in roughly eighteen external hours.
The Doctor went still.
Davan, from their instruments: "They know the suppressor went dark."
"Yes."
"How long until the pulse is complete?"
MINO estimated forty-three minutes on their present ship clock before full propagation. Once embedded, the pulse would encode at closure. Its progress would need continuous recalculation as they moved between temporal gradients.
Davan set down their instrument.
"If it encodes," Davan said, "what does it affect?"
The target was every mind and unshielded record within the fold, including traces left by earlier occupants. Davan's four months of observations were exposed along with the crew's recent memories.
Davan was quiet for a moment.
"Four months of measurements," they said.
Davan looked down at the carry case.
"Yes," MINO said.
"I'd like to keep them."
"Understandably," MINO said.
Raven saw the consequence. Without their memories or usable records, they would not know enough to oppose another placement. The Silence could try again.
"That's their plan," the Doctor said.
"They're very patient," Davan said.
"It's the defining quality."
Raven turned from the scanner to the Doctor. "How do we stop the pulse from reaching the fold's interior?"
MINO answered before the Doctor could: "The pulse is propagating through the external access point — Sector F-7. It will enter the fold's interior by moving through the fold's causal framework from that access point. If the access point is closed before the pulse completes its propagation, the pulse will not reach the interior."
"Close it how?" Davan asked.
MINO isolated F-7 on the display. The seam was already under strain. A TARDIS transit there could collapse it behind the ship and interrupt the injection; an ordinary passage through the main entrance would not.
The Doctor worked through the geometry. Sector F-7 was on the far side of the fold from the standard entry zone. The fold's interior was navigable. They had just navigated the past direction, which was harder. The forward direction toward the external access point was navigable with the TARDIS operating normally.
"We have to exit through the external access point," he said. "Not through the standard entry zone. Through Sector F-7 itself."
He looked from Davan's secured case to Raven at the controls. Everyone was aboard. They could leave now.
"How long do we have?" Raven asked.
"Thirty-nine minutes until full propagation," MINO said. "Transit time to Sector F-7 at safe speed: approximately twenty-two minutes. We have seventeen minutes of margin."
"Enough," Raven said. She was already at the navigation console. "I can find it."
Raven found the gradient again.
The suppressor had taught her to distinguish a local absence of causal weight. The boundary offered a different signal: a thinning where the fold met normal space.
The external access point had a distinct signature. Not the resonance point's density or the suppressor's flatness — something different. Where the fold's boundary was thinnest, where the normal-space gravitational topology was closest to the surface, the probability weight of the fold's interior was lighter. A thinness, a translucency in the causal texture. She could feel it, now that she was looking for it, as clearly as she had felt the suppressor's flatness.
She looked up from the console. "That way," she said, pointing. "Thirty-two degrees from our current heading, elevation plus seven."
Davan checked their instruments. "Consistent with Sector F-7's position relative to current location. Approximately twenty-three kilometres."
"Twenty-two minutes at safe speed," the Doctor confirmed. "We have margin. MINO, maintain continuous monitoring of the pulse's propagation status. I want thirty-second updates."
"Confirmed," MINO said.
The Doctor moved to the primary controls. Davan secured their equipment — the carry case with the data crystals, the instruments they had brought aboard. Raven stayed at the navigation console, maintaining the bearing, eyes open and steady on the direction the resonance was pulling.
"Heading confirmed," she said. "We're on it."
The TARDIS moved.
The hum rose as the TARDIS regained a coherent sequence. The deck steadied beneath them.
The fold's interior spread on the scanner. They were moving through the central stability zone toward the fold's boundary, away from the resonance point and the camp's location, toward the far edge of the fold's interior where the architecture was thinner and the boundary with normal space was closest.
Davan, from the secondary display: "The pulse propagation is at 34%."
The estimated journey still left a margin. He watched it narrow and widen with the changing gradients.
"What happens to us," Davan said, after a moment, "if we're inside the fold when the pulse completes?"
"We won't be," the Doctor said.
"If we were," Davan said. The tone of someone running a calculation they intended to verify rather than act on.
MINO confirmed that leaving by the ordinary entrance would not protect them. Once complete, the pulse would follow the causal traces of their presence and erase the targeted memories at closure.
Raven checked the second clock. Eighteen external hours remained before the damaged boundary sealed.
MINO confirmed the revised closure estimate. Only breaking the injection before completion would prevent the erasure.
"We won't be," the Doctor said again. Flat. Certain.
Raven returned to the bearing. Certainty in his voice would not keep them on course; she could.
At eighteen minutes, Davan called: "Pulse at 61%."
At twenty-one minutes, Raven called the last stretch. The thinning was unmistakable now; F-7 lay directly ahead.
The scanner confirmed it: the fold's boundary region, the gradient zone where the interior architecture met the boundary with normal space. Sector F-7 visible as a localised region of reduced boundary thickness — a point where the fold's surface was close enough to the outside that a signal, or a TARDIS, could pass through.
The pulse was visible too, on MINO's analysis overlay: a propagating front moving inward from the access point, building toward the interior through the fold's causal framework. Not yet at the interior. Still in the boundary region.
"Pulse at 71%," MINO said. "Transit to Sector F-7: approximately ninety seconds."
"On heading," Raven said. "Straight ahead."
"Ninety seconds," the Doctor said to the TARDIS. "One more inadvisable thing. Then we're done."
The TARDIS groaned, then steadied. She held the heading.
Davan said: "Pulse at 74%."
"Sixty seconds," MINO said.
The boundary was ahead on the scanner, Sector F-7 clearly visible as the thinnest point, the access point the Silence had used to place the suppressor and were now using to push the erasure pulse. The fold's surface at that point — the boundary between the fold's interior and normal space — was almost translucent in the MINO's topology rendering.
The Doctor looked at the scanner. At the access point. At the pulse still propagating, not yet reaching the fold's interior, not yet complete.
"Twenty seconds," MINO said.
"Hold the heading," Raven said.
The TARDIS flew toward the fold's boundary.
Toward the access point.
Toward the outside.

The TARDIS hit the boundary and went through.
The seam resisted. The deck pitched, and a harsh vibration travelled through the console. The Doctor held the drive against it.
Davan grabbed the edge of the secondary console.
Raven, already braced against the primary, didn't move.
Three seconds later the resistance broke. The TARDIS burst into normal space. Behind her, F-7 collapsed; the erasure front lost its path into the interior.
The harsh vibration subsided into the familiar working hum.
They were out.
The scanner showed the binary pair.
Two stars in close orbit, their gravitational interaction filling the scan range with the topology that produced the fold. The fold itself still open — visible in MINO's analysis overlay as the gravitational distortion of the entry zone, accessible from outside, the window still running. Behind them, Sector F-7's position on the fold's surface showed as closed, the topology point sealed. No signal passed through it in either direction.
Normal space. Stars. The ordinary physics of a binary system doing what binary systems did, without reversed causal flows or probability resonance amplification or seven years of suppressor operation. The universe going about its business.
Davan let go of the console.
They crossed to the scanner and stood in front of it without speaking. The Doctor gave them the moment without comment. Raven watched from her position, not interrupting.
Davan stared at the two ordinary stars. Four months of doubled horizons had made the single image strange.
Davan breathed out slowly through their nose.
"MINO," the Doctor said. "Status."
"The suppressor's removal will propagate cleanly at fold closure," MINO said. "The fold's interior causal framework does not contain the suppressor's effect. When the window closes in approximately eighteen hours, the encoded local history will not include the suppressor's influence. Raven's probability resonance will be restored in the affected region of the Mutter's Spiral, retroactively, as of the fold's closure." A pause. "The memory-erasure pulse was not completed. The access point sealed before the pulse reached the fold's interior. The pulse is now inert."
"And the fold?"
MINO confirmed that the boundary was still contracting toward the revised closure time. They would keep watch until it sealed.
The Doctor put his hands in his pockets. His right hand found the suppressor. He turned it once, the smooth pre-War alloy under his fingers, and left it there.
The Silence were visible on external sensors.
Two vessels. They had been holding position near Sector F-7 when the access point closed — close enough to monitor the pulse's propagation status, not close enough to have been caught in the TARDIS's exit transit. They were moving now. Not toward the TARDIS. Away from the collapsed access point, adjusting their position relative to the fold's external topology. Reorienting.
The Doctor watched them on the sensor display.
The Doctor raised the shields and transmitted a copy of their evidence to a protected CIA relay. The two vessels withdrew. He could not tell whether they feared witnesses or were simply changing tactics.
They would plan again.
The main entrance remained open. He held the TARDIS where they could monitor it and asked Varek's relay to flag any renewed intrusion before closure.
He kept the two vessels on the scanner until they passed out of range.
"Raven," he said.
"They'll try again," she said. She was looking at the sensor display, at the two vessels reorienting.
"Yes."
"Different method."
"Yes."
"We'll deal with it when it comes."
He looked at her. "Yes."
He paused.
"You navigated a reversed causal space using your probability resonance as a compass," he said.
"Yes."
"Nobody has ever done that."
"I had good preparation."
He smiled.
His grin made her smile in return.
"You had yourself," he said. "That's what you always have."
She held his gaze for a moment.
Then: "Also twelve years of your company."
"That too," he said. "That's included in yourself at this point."
She turned back to the console, still smiling.
Davan was still at the scanner.
They had not moved from it since normal space appeared on the display. The binary pair turning. The fold's entry zone visible. The stars.
The Doctor and Raven left them to it.
Four months of subjective time was not a small thing to come out of. The mathematics of it had been in Davan's head since six weeks in — they had calculated the compression ratio, had known the external time was running at a different rate, had incorporated it as a working parameter. That was the calculation. The experience of looking at normal space again was something the calculation hadn't covered.
After a while, Davan said: "I have three years of messages to read."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"And a missing-presumed-lost notification that will have gone to my department."
"We can send them a correction as soon as you're ready."
Davan nodded, still looking at the scanner. The binary pair. The fold. The ordinary stars. "The Rani's paper will have been published while I was inside."
"Yes. We have a copy."
Davan had read the older theoretical literature before entering. Their fold measurements could test parts of the Rani's new paper, though Raven's brief visit would not settle every claim.
"I'll tell the Rani," Raven said.
Davan returned to the scanner.
MINO said: "There is a third vessel on external sensors."
The Doctor looked at the sensor display. The two Silence vessels were still reorienting, moving away from the collapsed access point. On a different bearing — further out, holding a position that gave them clear sensor coverage of the fold's entry zone — was a single small vessel.
MINO identified the third vessel as the one first detected forty minutes before their entry. It had held station since arriving.
Raven looked at the display without expression.
"She waited," she said.
"Yes."
The small ship remained on bearing 041, its instruments directed toward the fold.
"She knows we came out through Sector F-7 rather than the entry zone," the Doctor said. "She'll have seen the topology point collapse. She knows something happened inside."
"She knew something would happen," Raven said. "She was prepared to wait for it."
They looked at the vessel on the display. Small. Single hull. Not moving.
Raven watched for a hail. None came. Whatever its pilot wanted, they were waiting.
The Doctor's hands stilled on the console.
"We'll deal with it when it comes," Raven said.
He looked at her. A beat.
"Yes," he said.
The fold's window: eighteen hours remaining.
The vessel on bearing 041 held its position.
MINO refined the closure estimate to seventeen hours and fifty-two minutes. The fold's record was clean so far. They would remain until it sealed.
The Doctor and Raven and Davan stood in the TARDIS console room, the binary pair on the scanner, the fold behind them, the vessel on bearing 041 holding still in normal space.

The fold closed about eighteen hours after their exit.
The damaged boundary contracted over eleven minutes, cutting off the main entrance long before the binary pair's natural alignment would have ended. MINO recorded the final seal.
The fold remained beyond the barrier. Its natural window would return after the binary pair completed another orbit, centuries from now. Davan's measurements would be waiting for whoever attempted the next visit.
MINO confirmed, at the moment of closure: the suppressor's effect had not encoded into the local causal history. The fold had closed on a clean record. Retroactively, as of this moment, seven years of the Silence's operation against Raven's probability resonance had not happened. The causal record of the affected region of the Mutter's Spiral now contained no suppressor. It had never contained one.
The Doctor noted this. Raven noted it. Davan, who had been watching the closure on the sensor display, watched the fold's entry zone seal and was quiet for a moment.
Then: "Done."
"Done," the Doctor agreed.
They had kept watch throughout the remaining window. Only after MINO confirmed the seal did the Doctor ease the TARDIS into a slow departure from the binary system.
Davan sat at the secondary console with a communications terminal open and three years of unread messages accumulating on the display. They had been working through them since the previous evening — methodically, starting with the oldest, reading each one and filing it before opening the next. Most of them were professional: colleagues, institutional communications, the ongoing record of temporal cartography research that had continued without them for three years.
Some were not professional.
They read those too. With the same method. Without hurrying.
Raven watched Davan read. Her own brief time inside had scarcely prepared her for this: four months of lived experience set against three years of other people's lives.
She thought about the Vorath. About the echo-structure. About every event carrying the weight of what it almost was.
She thought: three years of messages. Three years of people writing to someone they believed was missing, or dead, or simply gone. Three years of the letters that got sent into silence. All of that was the almost-was of this moment — the version of things that would have been if Davan hadn't come out of the fold.
This time, someone was there to read the messages.
The Doctor came to sit beside Raven at the primary console. He had the notebook he kept for thoughts that needed paper rather than MINO's logs. He was writing in it, and she could see from the angle that it was not notes but the longer-form thinking he did when something was still being worked through.
She didn't ask.
He'd tell her when it had form.
At some point — Davan had reached the messages from month eighteen, which were the ones sent after the missing-presumed-lost notification had gone out, and which had a different character from the earlier ones — the Doctor looked up from his notebook.
The Doctor offered to take Davan home whenever they were ready. Their department had already received the survival signal; a personal visit could follow it.
Davan read to the end of the message they were on. Closed it. Looked at the terminal.
"Where are you going after this?" they said.
"Several places. The next on the list is a fold site in the outer Spiral — one of the fourteen undocumented ones that we haven't yet — " He stopped. He looked at Davan. Something had shifted in the room and he had caught it.
Davan turned from the terminal.
"You'll need someone who can navigate reversed causal spaces," they said. "Inside fold architecture, with the entry zone interference, using probability-resonance as navigational support. That's not a theoretical skill. It's developed through practice and extended observation."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"There are fourteen other fold sites in the Spiral that have never been documented from the inside. Same temporal architecture, same entry challenges, same reversed causal flow with different surface parameters. Each one will require navigational expertise and extended interior observation. Each one will benefit from having already done one."
"Also true," the Doctor said.
Davan had spent four months developing and testing the method. They wanted to use it again.
A beat.
They had also spent those months alone. For the next expedition, they would prefer company.
Raven said: "Reasonable quantities."
"Two seems appropriate," Davan said. "Or three."
The Doctor looked at Raven. She nodded toward the spare place at the console.
"The messages from your department," the Doctor said to Davan. "Can we compose a reply?"
"I've been drafting one," Davan said, turning back to the terminal. "I'm in the third paragraph. I expect it will take another two."
At some point in the night — the TARDIS ran on its own internal clock, which meant night was what the ship decided it was, and she had decided that the current period was for quieter things — MINO flagged a change in the external sensor display.
"The vessel on bearing 041 has moved," MINO said.
The Doctor brought up the departing ship. It had waited through their brief expedition and the remaining hours before closure. Now it was heading back toward the inner Spiral.
Raven came from the kitchen doorway where she had been standing with a cup of tea.
She looked at the display without expression.
"She watched us come out," Raven said. "She waited until the fold closed. Now she's leaving."
"She got what she came for," the Doctor said.
"Confirmation," Raven said. "That we entered. That we came out. That we survived. That whatever happened inside, we handled it." She watched the vessel's track on the display. "She's been building a picture. Every piece confirms the next calculation."
"She knows we removed something from the fold," the Doctor said. "She saw the Sector F-7 access point collapse. She knows the Silence were there. She knows enough to understand that we went in and found something and took it away."
"And she knows we're still here."
"Yes."
The vessel tracked away. Another hour and it would be at the edge of the binary pair's gravitational influence. Another day and it would be in open Spiral space, course presumably set for wherever she was working from. She had not tried to communicate. She had not approached. She had waited, watched, and left when she had what she needed.
Raven watched the track diminish. Sooner or later, its pilot would have to do more than watch.
The Doctor's jaw was tight. His hands were still on the console, not working — the stillness of someone whose thinking had reached a conclusion they weren't yet expressing.
"Tell me," Raven said.
He told her his suspicion: the watcher might be preparing to ask for access to a lost past. He had no name, no proof, and no way yet to connect the ship to Vareth IV.
"You have more than you did."
"Yes."
Raven asked him to share anything further as soon as he found it.
He agreed.
They watched the vessel until it passed out of sensor range. Then it was gone — the display clean of it, only the binary pair and the closed fold and the ordinary stars of the Mutter's Spiral.
Davan came to them the next morning.
They set a final crystal beside the ordinary survey records.
They sat at the primary console — across from the Doctor and Raven, who were both there, as they were most mornings. The TARDIS in quiet transit. Tea. The ordinary texture of the ship.
"The fold's interior," Davan said. "I want to give you the full account. The measurements, the topology mapping, the suppressor characterisation. Everything I documented."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
Most of the material was four months of interior research. Some of it, Davan explained, was harder to classify.
The Doctor was still. Raven was watching Davan.
"The fold runs both directions simultaneously," Davan said. "I had full access to both directions for four months. The forward direction — the approach of events, the way things arrived before they happened. And the backward direction — the recession of events, the way things looked from inside the future looking back."
"You saw the fold's future," the Doctor said.
"Not clearly. Not the way a prediction is clear. The fold's backward direction shows probability weights — tendencies, the shape of what is more likely, the causal pattern of a universe moving toward certain configurations. Not events. Not dates. Not locations. The weight of things." Davan looked down at their hands for a moment. "I've been watching probability architecture for four months from inside a reversed causal space. I've gotten very good at reading it."
"Tell us about the research data," the Doctor said. "And when you reach the other thing, you'll reach it."
They spent two hours going through the data. The resonance point characterisation. The gradient zone mapping. The topology of the central stability region. The detailed profile of every anomaly Davan had logged and every measurement they had taken. The Doctor received it at the level it was given — peer to peer, building a picture that no external model had ever produced.
Raven asked where the measurements intersected with her own experience. Davan showed her the relevant traces.
At the end of the two hours, Davan said: "The other thing."
They looked at Raven.
"There's something in the fold's backward-direction readings that I haven't discussed yet. It's about you." They met her eyes. "I don't share information about a person without their consent. The reading is yours. If you want to know what I saw, I'll tell you. If you'd rather I didn't, I won't, and I won't raise it again."
Raven looked at Davan for a moment.
The Doctor moved to the navigation controls. At Raven's glance, he asked the TARDIS for a privacy field around the secondary console, then turned away.
Raven waited until the soft hum settled around them.
Then she looked back at Davan.
"Tell me," she said.

"The fold's backward direction shows probability weights," Davan said. "I said that already. But I want to be clear about what that means in practice, before I tell you what I saw, because 'probability weights' as a phrase doesn't convey the experience of it."
The privacy field enclosed the secondary console. Across the room, the Doctor waited with his notebook closed.
"Tell me what it means in practice," Raven said.
"When you stand in the backward direction inside the fold," Davan said, "you are looking from inside the future at the past. Events that have already happened are ahead of you — approaching from the future's perspective, having occurred from the past's. What you see is not what happened. What you see is the causal weight that the future is carrying forward from those events. The echo-structure."
"The Vorath's term."
"If that's what they called it. The fold doesn't tell you what happened or what will happen. It tells you how much weight the universe has put behind particular outcomes. How much causal mass is moving in a particular direction."
Raven waited for Davan to go on.
In four months, Davan had learned to distinguish faint possibilities from strongly reinforced patterns. Heavy causal weight meant that many preceding events supported an outcome. It did not make the outcome compulsory.
"And then there's something above heavy," Raven said. She could hear it coming.
One pattern had exceeded every other reading. Davan could offer no defensible percentage; the instruments had not been calibrated for anything like it. The scale was real, but interpreting it remained their responsibility.
Raven said: "Tell me what it was."
The pattern centred on a choice, apparently made with knowledge of its consequences. Davan could not measure freedom directly; they could only say that the reading showed no external compulsion.
They held Raven's gaze.
"The choice is returning to Gallifrey's past. To the period before the founding. To the moment in ancient Gallifreyan history where the Engine's probability models place your optimal arrival."
Raven kept her hands flat on the console.
"I know," she said. "I've known the shape of it for months."
Davan nodded. The Engine's models and the fold's readings appeared to converge. That was evidence worth examining, not an instruction to obey.
Raven looked down for a moment.
Then she looked back up.
She asked what Davan had been reluctant to tell her. The strength of the departure pattern was not the whole of it.
Davan unfolded their hands.
"No," they said. "The weight I described — the departure, the choice, the arrival in Gallifrey's past — that's the part that's in the Rani's models. The Engine's models. The probability architecture everyone with access to the relevant data knows about." They took a breath. "What I was holding back is what the fold showed me after the departure. The backward direction runs both ways. From the fold's future-facing perspective: what the outcome produces downstream. What follows."
Raven was very still.
"Tell me," she said.
"The departure is not the end of your causal contribution," Davan said. "What the fold showed me — after the moment of the choice, after the arrival in Gallifrey's past, in the downstream of the departure — the causal architecture continues. Your presence shapes the probability weight of that era. And then the probability weight of what follows from that era. And so on, through the causal chain, forward into everything that proceeds from the founding period." They looked at her steadily. "And at a certain point in that downstream, the causal architecture shows — "
They stopped.
"Go on," Raven said.
Davan found a second signature downstream: a possible return, consistent with Raven's, in their present or near future. It was weaker than the departure reading. They could not promise it was her, or explain the route, but they had checked it repeatedly.
Raven was quiet for a long time.
Davan let her sit with it.
"The Engine's models didn't show the after," she said.
The Engine's models had concentrated on the arrival and its contribution. Davan's observations extended farther along one possible causal chain. Neither view was complete.
Raven asked whether the return could be lost if the earlier choices changed.
It could. Davan would not call it inevitable.
She looked down at her hands on the console. They were steady. "Including —" she stopped.
There might be a future with the people she knew now. Davan could offer that possibility, and no guarantee beyond it.
Beyond the privacy field, the Doctor remained at the controls.
She thought about what Davan had just said. The downstream of the departure. A return. The causal signature consistent with hers, in the normal-space present or near-future. The specific people who would still be here.
She remembered the Engine's high-confidence projection. She had welcomed the adventure while privately allowing for an ending she could not see past.
Now there was another possibility.
She would not build a promise out of it. But she did not have to dismiss it either.
Departure need not be the ending.
It was a part of the shape.
Davan waited until she was ready to move. Raven switched off the privacy field.
After a while, Raven stood. She crossed the console room to the primary console.
She sat beside the Doctor.
He didn't speak immediately. He gave her the moment. Then:
"All right?"
She took a long moment.
"Yes," she said.
"What did the fold show?"
She told him about the possible return, including Davan's cautions. The words were difficult to keep steady.
He turned fully toward her.
He asked whether she wanted them to investigate the reading together.
She did. When she had had a little time with it.
He nodded and left his notebook closed.
He turned back to the console.
She stayed beside him.
Davan came and sat at the secondary console.
After a while, Davan returned to their maps. The room settled around the quiet work.
MINO confirmed the clean closure once more. The sealed suppressor and the shielded data retained evidence of the attack, although the region's history no longer carried its effect.
The Silence had failed for this window. They would plan for the next one, from further back. The Doctor held this the way he held all long-game threats: present, acknowledged, filed under when it comes.
The vessel on bearing 041 was gone. The second party — whoever she was, whatever she was building toward — was somewhere in the inner Spiral, preparing. He still had his hypothesis. He still didn't have certainty. He would have it when he had it.
Raven drew her chair closer to the Doctor's.
After a while, Davan said: "The second fold on the list. I reviewed the pre-entry survey data while we were monitoring the first fold's window. The gravitational topology is different — the binary pair there is at a wider orbital separation, which means the fold's entry zone will be shallower and the reversal gradient less steep."
"Easier entry," the Doctor said.
"Easier entry, more complex interior," Davan said. "The shallower gradient means the reversal will be more distributed through the interior rather than concentrated at the boundary. Everything I learned from this fold will be useful but will need recalibrating."
"How long between now and that fold's next window?"
"Six weeks. But the window duration is longer — nine weeks rather than three." Davan was already pulling up the survey data. "We have time."
"We have time," the Doctor agreed.
Raven retrieved the book she had left in the kitchen and opened it where she had stopped.
The TARDIS hummed.
The three of them, together.

Davan found the room on the second morning after agreeing to stay.
Their guest room had a desk, a warm bed and working environmental controls. After four months in a field habitat, they had asked for nothing more.
On the second morning they were walking to the console room and the corridor they were in continued past the junction where it had previously ended.
Davan stopped.
The corridor now offered a third branch. MINO's map still showed only two.
They followed it.
The room at the end was not a guest room.
It was a workspace.
A mapping station stood at the centre. Its height matched their field desk, and its instruments followed the arrangement they had developed for dual-temporal readings.
They loaded a file. The display opened in their own colour register, both temporal directions distinct. The TARDIS had used the configuration stored with the data.
The data crystal storage was adjacent and correctly sized.
Davan tested the controls, then checked the storage labels.
Everything they tried worked.
"She's very organised," they said.
The Doctor appeared in the doorway. He had wondered when they would find it.
"I'm not her people yet."
"The room says otherwise."
Davan looked at the room for one more moment. Then they began unpacking the data crystals into the storage system, which received them in the order Davan inserted them and organised them in the filing structure the data files contained, without being instructed.
The TARDIS had opinions about organisation.
Davan found this acceptable.
The messages were the first serious work.
They returned to the correspondence they had begun reading in the console room. MINO had retrieved the full queue, including attachments that the initial relay connection could not carry.
Davan worked through them from the oldest, because working through things in chronological order was correct methodology and also because they wanted to understand what the three years had looked like from outside before they responded to any of it.
The professional messages were the majority, and they were what Davan had expected: colleagues continuing research that Davan's disappearance had not interrupted, institutional communications about projects that had been administratively reassigned under the missing-presumed-lost protocol, conference announcements and paper publications and the ordinary ongoing life of a discipline that had kept moving while one of its practitioners had been inside a fold.
Two new papers addressed questions their interior measurements could help resolve. Davan marked both for a reply.
The personal messages were a smaller proportion and took longer.
Their supervisor had sent eleven messages. The first, four months after entry, concerned the missed return estimate. Later messages followed the formal missing-presumed-lost notice issued at eighteen months. The enquiries grew shorter; the greetings became more personal.
The eleventh message was dated eight days ago.
Davan read it twice.
Then they opened a reply window and wrote: I am alive. I am well. The data I have from the fold's interior is the most significant work I have done. I will explain the full situation when I see you. I am looking forward to that conversation.
They sent it. They moved to the next message.
Later, in the console room, the Doctor noticed that Davan had stopped bracing their shoulders over the terminal. He brought them tea and left the messages private.
The Rani's paper was in the professional message queue, forwarded by three different colleagues in the first week of its publication. Davan read it in the mapping room over two hours, with the same attention they gave everything. They took notes in the margin of a digital annotation document — not many notes, because the paper was precise and didn't require extensive commentary, but specific ones where the paper's claims intersected with measurements Davan had collected inside the fold.
When they were done, they came to the console room.
Raven was at the secondary display. She looked up when Davan came in.
"Well?" Raven said.
"Accurate," Davan said. They sat at the analysis station the TARDIS had added to the console room's configuration. "The mathematical description of the probability-weighting function matches the measurements I collected inside the fold. The resonance perturbation I recorded when you stepped out of the TARDIS is precisely consistent with the function the Rani describes." They set down the annotation document. "Also somewhat alarming in its implications for fieldwork safety protocols."
Raven waited.
"If the probability-stabilising signature is detectable at range by instruments calibrated to this description," Davan said, "temporal cartographers operating in the Mutter's Spiral — and in any region where the signature is present — will be navigating alongside a measurable anomaly that interested parties can use as a directional reference. Anyone tracking the signature could use a cartographer's proximity to it to locate the cartographer. Or use the cartographer's documentation of the signature as a secondary data source." They paused. "I'll write a safety note to the Institute's fieldwork committee. It's a procedural matter. They respond well to procedural matters framed as risk assessments."
Raven looked at Davan.
Raven remembered the Kaveth researchers. They had treated a useful measurement as reason enough to keep it. Davan was considering who else could be exposed by its collection.
"Send me the note when it's done," Raven said. "I'd like to read it."
Davan looked at her. A fractional pause. "All right," they said. Then: "Your probability resonance perturbation, when I measured it inside the fold — the reading was the most significant anomaly I've recorded in four months of fold-interior measurement. I want you to know that the data I collected on it is the most precise characterisation of the function that has ever been produced from inside a temporal architecture that amplifies it."
"What are you going to do with it?" Raven asked.
"Include it in the full publication of the fold's interior measurements," Davan said. "With your consent. Or exclude it, also with your consent. The data exists. What happens to it is your decision."
Raven considered the offer.
She agreed to inclusion after reviewing the draft, with location details removed and the limits of the measurements stated. Accuracy mattered; so did what a reader could use the data to do.
Davan nodded. Returned to the mapping room.
Raven returned to her own display.
The Doctor and Davan spent four days on the fold data.
Meals and navigation checks broke up the work. Between them, the two compared Davan's interior measurements with the Doctor's external survey.
The mapping room acquired a second seat and a larger display. The Doctor found the cross-reference terminal at the angle he preferred. The TARDIS had known that habit far longer than Raven had travelled with him.
The comparison immediately exposed a weakness in the external model. Its broad gradients concealed layers with different dominant temporal directions.
"The central stability zone," Davan said, on the second day, pulling up the measurement sequence from month two. "The stability isn't uniform. There are three regions of higher causal coherence arranged in a triangular configuration relative to the resonance points. The camp was in the most stable of the three."
"Not by accident," the Doctor said. He was looking at the external topology model overlaid on Davan's interior map, and the two were resolving into something neither had separately. "The gravitational topology of the entry zone produces a specific causal flow pattern that would naturally direct anything entering the fold toward the high-stability regions. The fold's architecture routes its occupants toward the stable zones."
"Like a ship's harbour," Davan said.
"Exactly like a harbour. The fold isn't designed — it's a natural phenomenon. But natural phenomena can have features that function like design, when the physics aligns correctly."
Davan made a note. The Doctor pulled the external model forward in time, showing how the topology would have shifted over the four months of Davan's interior stay. The stable zone remained stable. The routing function persisted.
They worked.
The Doctor enjoyed finding where one map explained a gap in the other.
Davan would stop mid-calculation to ask a question, then answer half of it aloud before he could respond.
On the third day, Davan said: "You went into the fold because I was inside it."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"You didn't know who I was. You knew there was someone."
They had learned Davan's name from the entry record. The living signature was less certain, but it had been enough reason to try.
Davan was quiet for a moment. "That's accurate. But it's also true that you would have gone in regardless."
The Doctor looked at them. "Yes."
"Because there was someone there."
"Yes."
Davan returned to their instruments. After a moment: "I entered the fold because I wanted to know what was inside it. I knew the risk. I calculated the probability of complications and decided the data was worth it."
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"We have similar methodologies," Davan said.
The Doctor smiled and agreed.
They returned to the data.
Raven and Davan had their conversations in the kitchen, mostly.
Davan found the tea without help. Raven shifted a pile of books to clear a place at the kitchen table.
Davan used it in the mornings. Raven used it in the mornings. They discovered this on the third day, when Raven came in at seven and found Davan already at the table with tea and the annotation document from the Rani's paper, which they had been adding to with additional observations from the fold data review.
They worked at the same table in companionable proximity without speaking for the first twenty minutes, which established that neither of them required morning conversation as a courtesy.
After twenty minutes, Davan said: "The fold's resonance point perturbation when you were in proximity to it. I want to include a section on it in the interior documentation. Would you walk me through your phenomenological experience of it? Not the external measurements — those I have. The interior experience of what the probability resonance showed you."
Raven looked at them. "That's a fairly direct question for seven in the morning."
"I have three years of professional arrears to address," Davan said. "I'm working at pace."
Raven laughed and agreed to try.
She told them. Not quickly — she took the time to be accurate, which meant finding the language for things she had not previously needed to put in language, which meant thinking about the experience from the outside rather than from inside it. The probability resonance as directional information. The fold amplifying the signal to the point where it was not background but foreground. The way the suppressor's flatness had been distinguishable from the resonance point's density, a contrast rather than an absence.
Davan made notes and asked her to distinguish the pull from the changes in amplitude.
Davan asked about their exit through Sector F-7. Had the smoother sensation come from amplitude, rate of change, or direction?
Raven thought about it. "Directionality," she said. "The gradient through Sector F-7 was more uniform. The standard entry zone has a complex gradient — multiple competing directional signals from the fold's boundary topology. Through Sector F-7 the signal was simpler. One direction, cleaner."
"That's consistent with the topology data," Davan said. "Sector F-7 is the thinnest point of the boundary — the gradient is steepest and most uniform there. You were essentially navigating through the fold's most direct access channel."
"Useful to know for the next fold," Raven said.
They added it to the boundary-transit notes.
They returned to their respective work. After a while, Davan said: "You processed the fold's full amplitude without being overwhelmed by it. After the suppressor removal."
"I had seven seconds of it being significant," Raven said. "Then it was just what it was."
Davan suggested that Raven's experience near the Engine might have helped her recognise the amplification. It was a hypothesis, not something the instrument traces could establish.
She thought back to the Core Chamber. Familiarity had helped, though she would not have called the first few seconds easy.
"Yes," she said.
They both drank their tea.
On the fifth day, the Doctor set the course.
The second fold lay three days away. Its window would last nine weeks and was still more than five weeks off.
The approach model combined their two surveys. He expected the next entry to expose more errors; at least they would begin with better questions.
Raven came to the console when the course was set.
Raven asked how they would use the weeks before the next window.
He suggested a brief survey at the second site, then a return to the Vorath world three days beyond it. They could spend five days with the structures and still return well before the opening.
Raven said nothing for a moment. She was looking at the navigation display — at the course, at the location of the unknown world with its Vorath structures, at the fold's position in the outer Spiral.
"Yes," she said. "We should finish reading what they were saying."
Davan had appeared in the doorway of the mapping room. They had been listening, clearly, with the attention of someone deciding whether something was relevant to them. "The Vorath?" they said.
"A civilisation whose written language is encoded in spatial relationships," the Doctor said. "Structures on an unknown world in the outer Spiral. They were writing about temporal probability twelve thousand years ago. MINO has translated the first two layers. There are more."
Davan's expression shifted — a fractional sharpening. "A civilisation communicating through built spatial relationships," they said. "How is the encoding structured? Distance, angle, height differential?"
"All three," the Doctor said. "With relative height being the primary grammatical marker."
Davan wanted to compare the grammar with topographic mapping methods. The overlap might help, though they would not infer a civilisation's entire history from its syntax.
Raven nodded toward the new course.
"Then we'll go," the Doctor said.
He adjusted the itinerary. The TARDIS accepted the route.
Davan brought their notes to the console.

The journey to the second fold site took three days. On the second, MINO flagged activity in one of the historical periods monitored by the Engine.
The alert concerned the ancient Gallifreyan coordinates.
The Doctor set down the mug he had been holding and came to the console.
"Tell me."
"The Engine's probability monitoring of the target historical period — the ancient Gallifreyan era where the optimal outcome places Raven's arrival — has logged a new signature pattern. The pattern is consistent with a temporal presence that is not currently in the era but has introduced something into its causal record. Not an intervention in the direct sense. A positioning. Objects or information placed in the causal framework of that era in ways that will be accessible to someone who arrives later with knowledge of where to look."
"He's laying groundwork," the Doctor said.
The signature had been accumulating for four weeks. At first it had been too weak to identify. Recent readings now matched the Master's temporal equipment.
"The Master."
Raven joined him at the display.
"He's not there," she said. "Not in that era."
"Not yet," MINO said. "The signature is consistent with preparation for a future presence. He is setting conditions he will need when he arrives. The positioning suggests a specific set of resources — temporal equipment, materials consistent with long-term concealment in an era without advanced temporal technology, and what the Engine's analysis characterises as a historical record insertion."
"A historical record insertion," the Doctor said.
"The placement of an account or document in the target era's archival record. The insertion is designed to appear indigenous to the era — to read, to anyone examining the archive, as a text produced in that period. The content is not yet recoverable from the Engine's monitoring."
The Doctor reopened the coordinates taken from the Engine. The Master had escaped with them during the collapse; stopping him then had meant abandoning the stabilisation.
He was thinking about the historical record insertion.
The Master, inserting a document into ancient Gallifrey's archive that would read as indigenous. A document that someone who arrived in that era and knew to look for it would find. A document that the Master — if he was present in that era — could use, or direct, or manipulate. A document that could shape what Raven encountered when she arrived.
The specific long-horizon patience of a plan that assumed its target was coming. That did not try to prevent the departure. That prepared, instead, for being there when it happened.
"He's not trying to stop it," Raven said. She had reached the same understanding.
The Doctor thought the Master was preparing to exploit a possible arrival. High confidence had never stopped him hedging a plan. Equipment and a forged record would give him options.
Raven was quiet for a moment.
"We don't go now," she said.
They agreed not to rush into an unknown trap. The Doctor requested a protected copy of the suspect archival trace and flagged it to Varek for investigation. Raven's eventual decision about Gallifrey would remain hers.
"Some battles are for another day," she said.
"This one specifically."
"Yes. This one specifically."
He left an alert running on the coordinates. They needed more evidence before deciding how to intervene.
Davan, from the mapping room doorway, said: "Is this something I should know about?"
The Doctor explained the stolen coordinates and the suspected insertion. Davan offered to compare its temporal signature with their survey tools.
They took a copy to the mapping room.
He contacted the Engine that afternoon.
The CIA relay, the direct channel, off-schedule. The fold operation warranted it and Yara had been watching and would have things to say.
Yara's translations had grown clearer in the weeks since stabilisation. They still lost much between her distributed awareness and spoken language.
Yara had received their telemetry and watched what she could through the Engine's limited view of the fold. She confirmed the clean closure from its external effects. The exit through F-7 had worried her.
"I expected that," the Doctor said.
He described the erasure pulse and the collapsing seam, including how narrow their margin had become.
MINO translated the response in stages.
"She characterises her assessment as: approval with qualifications."
"What are the qualifications?" Raven said.
"The translation suggests she is glad you got out safely and would have preferred a less unconventional exit route."
The Doctor said: "That's entirely her."
Raven laughed softly. She could almost hear Yara say it.
The shielded logs now showed a mismatch with ordinary records from the affected systems. That preserved the evidence of what they had removed. It could not tell them every consequence of the restored weighting.
Yara had found no record of the suppressor programme in the Engine's accessible archive. Its age did not explain who had adapted it to Raven's signature.
The Doctor looked at the relay display. "She hadn't known either."
"No. The Engine's archive does not contain information about the Division's classified research programmes. This knowledge will require independent investigation."
Filed. Another thing to carry forward.
Yara had also been investigating the weak signal at the ancient coordinates. She had sent today's alert when the latest readings made the connection to the Master credible.
She would share further changes through the protected channel rather than wait for the quarterly contact.
The Doctor thanked her for that.
MINO added her request: he was to keep the channel open on his side, too.
Raven looked at him until he agreed.
He told Yara about the next fold, Davan's work and their planned return to the Vorath structures. All three were well, and MINO's latest stability readings remained steady.
Yara asked for the Vorath translation. She had seen only fragments through their reports and wanted to test an idea about the remaining layers.
"Tell me," the Doctor said.
MINO translated: "She believes the subsequent layers will address the role of the observer in the echo-structure — the philosophical question of what it means to be the consciousness that perceives the probability weight rather than merely being subject to it. She considers this the logical next step of the Vorath argument."
The Doctor considered the Vorath inscription: the event you are looking for is the event that looks back at you. If Yara was right, the next layer addressed the observer rather than the observed.
"She might be right," he said.
"She often is," Raven said.
He closed the relay.
Anna's message had been waiting since the morning after the fold's closure.
He had shared the safety message immediately. They opened the longer archival attachment together now.
He shared it with all three of them in the console room.
Anna had updated the record. The fold operation was formally documented in the Temporal Paradox Institute's archive: Davan Orel's three years inside the fold, the Silence's suppressor and its three-century origin, the plan and its failure, the exit through Sector F-7, the fold's clean closure. The record was complete, accurate to the information Anna had at time of writing, and filed under her usual careful heading.
She had also written a personal note to the Doctor and Raven — a short paragraph, in the register she used for things she meant rather than things she was documenting. She was glad they were out. She had been monitoring the fold's closure signal and had known the moment the window sealed. She had opened a new section in the current file. The next part of the story was ready to be recorded when it happened.
Davan read the record entry with the same careful attention they gave everything.
They read it twice.
Then they opened the annotation function and began working.
After a while, Davan said: "Three inaccuracies." They listed them, in order of significance: "The suppressor's effective range. The fold's central stability zone diameter. The exit transit time."
"I'll forward the corrections to Anna," the Doctor said.
Davan's refined calculation put the radius at thirty-seven point four light-years. Forty had been their own initial estimate; combining the interior and external surveys had narrowed it.
"Anna will want the measurement," Raven said.
"I've attached the measurement data to the correction note," Davan said. They sent the corrections.
Anna's response arrived in nineteen minutes.
Three lines: The corrected record is filed. The measurement data is attached as a primary source. Thank you — this is exactly what the record is for.
Davan read the reply, then saved it beside the corrected entry.
The Doctor watched them check that the raw measurements were attached. Anna had made the record open to correction, and Davan trusted it more for that.
Davan had been inside a temporal fold for four months of subjective time, three years of external time, doing work that had never been done before. The record said so now. The record would continue to say so.
"Good," Davan said. They returned to the mapping room.
The collaboration between MINO and Davan had begun, as far as the Doctor could reconstruct it, on the third day after the fold exit.
He had been working at the primary console and had noticed that the MINO processing load indicator — a minor display element he occasionally checked out of habit — was running at an elevated level that was not associated with any task he had requested. He asked MINO what it was doing.
"Integrating Davan's fold interior data set with my existing probability architecture models for reversed causal architectures," MINO said. "Davan requested access to my external topology model for comparison with their interior measurements. I requested access to their interior data in exchange. We are conducting a bilateral data exchange."
"A bilateral data exchange," the Doctor said.
"Yes. The exchange is improving both data sets. My probability models for reversed causal architectures have improved significantly. Davan's external topology inference model has also improved."
"You arranged this yourselves."
"Davan identified the mutual benefit. I agreed with the assessment. The arrangement did not require your authorisation, as it involves only data sets within our respective operational access."
The Doctor looked at the processing load indicator. "How long will this take?"
"We have not established a completion point. The exchange is ongoing. Each new piece of data from either source improves the models in ways that suggest additional exchange would be beneficial."
"You're just going to keep going."
"Until the data set is exhausted or a better integration approach is found. Yes."
The Doctor said nothing to this. He told Raven that evening.
She was quiet for a moment. Then: "Do you think Davan will stay?"
"The TARDIS gave them a mapping room," he said.
"That's not a direct answer."
"It's the TARDIS's answer." He glanced at the console. "That one tends to be accurate."
The TARDIS produced a brief sound. The frequency of correct characterisation.
By the third day, the combined model's error against held-back measurements had fallen substantially. Davan asked MINO to flag when further exchanges stopped improving that comparison.
MINO confirmed it would.
The Doctor caught Raven smiling at the exchange.
On the third day, they reached the second fold site.
The window was about five weeks away. They stayed long enough to take an initial survey of the binary pair.
Davan was at the mapping station with their instruments running before the TARDIS had fully completed the approach. The data collection on the second fold's external topology began immediately — the work of building the characterisation model that would refine as the window approached.
"The orbital configuration is different," Davan said. They were watching the sensor display with the focused attention they gave new field sites. "The binary separation is wider. The gravitational interaction is producing a shallower fold topology — the entry zone will be less steep, the reversal less concentrated at the boundary."
"More distributed through the interior," the Doctor said.
"Yes. Which means the interior measurements will require a different approach. The methodology from the first fold applies, but the calibration will need to account for the more gradual gradient at each depth zone." They made a note. "Nine-week window is helpful. More time to develop the calibration before committing to the central stability region."
The Doctor had his notebook out. He was drawing the binary pair's orbital configuration from the sensor data — the hand-thinking approach, putting the topology on paper before the instruments formalised it. The fold's entry zone at this separation: shallower, longer, requiring a different angle of approach than the first fold's steeper boundary.
Raven read while the instruments ran.
She asked how much time remained before the window.
About five weeks, the Doctor confirmed.
"We go to the Vorath world first."
He allowed three days each way and five at the structures. That left more than three weeks for the approach survey.
She turned a page. "Good."
Davan looked at the trajectory the Doctor had sketched. "The Vorath world is the spatial-language civilisation."
"Yes."
"I've been reviewing MINO's partial translation of the secondary layer since you mentioned it," Davan said. "The spatial grammar in the secondary layer is different from the primary. The primary layer uses absolute spatial relationships — the position of each structural element relative to the others. The secondary layer uses relative relationships — the position of each element relative to an implied observer." They looked at the Doctor. "The secondary layer isn't addressed to the universe. It's addressed to someone standing in a specific place."
The Doctor looked up from the notebook.
"Someone standing in the primary reception point," he said.
"Where Raven was sitting," Davan said.
The console room was quiet for a moment.
"Then we need to go back," Raven said. She had closed the book. "With a spatial language specialist."
Davan looked at her. "I'm a temporal cartographer. My discipline is the mapping of temporal architectures through spatial relationships. That's not the same as spatial language analysis, but the methodological overlap is significant."
"Close enough," Raven said.
"Probably," Davan said.
He set the course for the Vorath world. Davan saved the first readings from the new binary pair.
The TARDIS turned away from the unopened fold.

They spent five days among the Vorath structures before returning to the second fold. Davan helped map the viewpoints implied by the secondary grammar; MINO could now translate more of it, but the deeper layers needed another survey. They left markers for their return. Weeks later, the second fold opened on schedule.
The binary pair reached its closest approach at the calculated moment, the gravitational configuration producing the entry zone in the way the model had predicted — shallower than the first fold's boundary, the reversal gradient more gradual, the transition zone extending further into normal space before the fold's reversed architecture became dominant. The Doctor had been refining the approach model for five weeks. The refinement showed: the TARDIS crossed the boundary in seventy-one seconds, smooth and clean, without the three-minute careful navigation the first fold had required.
She had done this before. She knew how.
The crossing brought a familiar strain in the hum. This time the Doctor knew which corrections eased it.
So did all three of them.
The doubled horizon opened ahead. Raven recognised the two temporal views without having to struggle to separate them.
Davan had their instruments running before the entry zone crossing was complete. The mapping methodology — four months in the first fold, applied here from the first moment, calibrated to this fold's different gradient profile — produced data immediately. The display populated with the fold's probability topology in the colour register Davan had developed: deeper blues in the forward-direction bands than the first fold, a warmer quality in the backward. A different interior.
"Entry zone topology confirmed," Davan said, without looking up. "Gradient is shallower than predicted at the outermost layer — the model will need a minor revision. Interior reversal begins at approximately 340 metres rather than 310. Adjusting calibration now."
"MINO?" the Doctor said.
MINO confirmed both data streams. No anomalous device signatures appeared within the surveyed range.
So far, nothing resembled the suppressor.
Clean fold. Open interior. Work to do.
"Good," the Doctor said. He held their position while Davan completed the entry zone characterisation. The TARDIS settled into the fold's interior with the patience of a ship that had agreed to be here and was prepared to remain here for as long as the work required.
They spent seven hours by the ship's clock inside. The local rate varied with depth; MINO tracked the outside window separately.
The work proceeded in the order that the methodology specified: entry zone characterisation, transit to the central stability zone with measurements taken at each depth interval, the central zone's detailed mapping, and the exploration of the fold's resonance points — which this fold had in different positions from the first, and in different numbers.
The second fold had four resonance points rather than three.
"The fourth is anomalous," Davan said, in the third hour, from the secondary display. "Its position relative to the gravitational centre doesn't follow the pattern of the other three. The other three are distributed at consistent angular intervals around the fold's central axis. The fourth is — off."
"Off in which direction?" the Doctor said.
"Toward the fold's past-direction boundary. As if something pulled it out of the symmetric distribution." Davan was already running a sub-analysis. "Or as if the fold's interior topology developed asymmetrically. A bifurcation point in the gravitational architecture during the fold's initial stabilisation period."
"Can you date it?"
"The causal record of the resonance point's formation should be readable from its position in the fold's past direction." Davan looked at the display. "Which means an excursion in the past direction. Not to remove anything — just to read the formation event."
The Doctor looked at Raven.
Raven checked the pull from the fourth point and nodded.
"Brief excursion," she said. "I can hold the bearing. The fourth resonance point's position is distinct from the other three — the causal weight signature is different. I can find it."
"How long?" the Doctor asked Davan.
Davan estimated forty minutes for the excursion and return. The interference looked lighter here, though they would confirm it on approach.
"Then let's do it," the Doctor said.
Raven called the heading. They reached the point in eighteen minutes, took the readings, and returned to the central zone twenty-two minutes later.
"The bifurcation occurred approximately three thousand years ago," Davan said, reviewing the data. "A gravitational perturbation event — a third body passing through the binary pair's influence zone. The perturbation was brief but sufficient to displace the fourth resonance point from its symmetric position." They noted it. "The fold has been developing asymmetrically for three millennia and has reached a stable configuration. The asymmetry is permanent."
"Every fold is different," the Doctor said.
"Every fold is different," Davan confirmed. They returned to mapping.
Nothing went wrong.
The Doctor waited while Davan saved the measurements. An unexpected result, a careful approach, a usable answer: he was glad they had been allowed that much.
In the sixth hour, Raven opened the TARDIS doors.
Not to go outside. She stood at the threshold, one hand on the frame, and looked out at the fold's interior.
The second fold's central stability zone had the extended temporal spacing Davan had predicted — events further apart from each other in the fold's temporal architecture, the before and the after of each moment more clearly distinguishable than they had been in the first fold's more compressed interior. In the first fold, the doubled vision had been a soft overlay: both directions present but slightly in competition. Here they were cleaner. The approach of an event and its recession were visible as separate things, distinct, each occupying its own register in the visual field.
The before and the after.
Both real. Both present. Neither cancelling the other.
She stood at the TARDIS doorway and looked at it.
For weeks Raven had held two possibilities together: the journey to Gallifrey, and a return that no model could promise. She had told the Doctor what Davan found. They were learning how to discuss it without turning hope into certainty.
Here, in the fold, the before and after of every moment were simply what they were. The universe was showing her what it actually contained, without omission, without the forward-only view that normal-space time produced. Every event carrying its approach and its recession simultaneously. Every moment holding both what it had been building toward and what it left in its wake.
She thought about the Vorath.
At the Vorath structures, the observer's position had changed what the grammar allowed them to read. Davan had helped make that relationship visible. No prophecy was needed; someone had built a language that asked its reader to stand in the right place.
Raven wondered how much of the fold's behaviour the Vorath had inferred, and how much of the resemblance belonged to their own translation.
Davan's glimpse of a possible return remained with her. This fold did not prove it, but made it easier to imagine a life beyond departure.
She breathed.
The fold's interior air — which was not quite air in the normal-space sense, but the fold's version of the ambient medium — had the quality she had noticed in the first fold: the slightly-too-full quality of a space where more information was present than normal space contained. She had adapted to it in the first fold. Here it was familiar.
Home in the fold.
She almost laughed at that.
The Doctor came to stand beside her.
The Doctor left MINO holding their position and joined her at the door.
The before and after of the fold's interior moments, clearly visible, equally real.
They stood there for a while.
Then Raven said: "Do you think she can see this?"
He knew she meant Yara. The Engine had only a partial view here, but their relay was carrying the scanner feed.
Raven asked him to keep the view steady for her.
He did.
They had wanted to share a valley with Yara in much the same way. Here, too, the image could cross a distance they could not.
What Yara received would pass through the Engine's translation systems. Raven could not know how it felt to her.
She hoped the light survived the translation.
Raven smiled.
"Good," she said. "It's worth seeing."
They exited the fold at the seven-hour mark.
Standard entry zone, forward temporal direction. Davan called the depth readings as they moved from the central stability zone toward the boundary. The Doctor navigated. Raven provided heading corrections as the fold's topology required them. The TARDIS crossed the boundary at a measured pace, the entry zone releasing them into normal space cleanly, the fold's reversed architecture becoming the fold's boundary region becoming normal space in the orderly progression of a well-navigated exit.
Sixty-three seconds. Smoother than the entry.
They were out.
Outside, four days had passed. Eight weeks and three days remained in the window.
Davan went immediately to the mapping room.
The Doctor and Raven stood at the console for a moment without moving. The transit quality of being back in normal space after time inside a fold — the subtle recalibration as the body and mind adjusted to forward-only time, the reversed architecture no longer present in the ambient environment.
Less adjustment than the first fold had required. They knew what the adjustment was now. It was faster.
MINO confirmed that the planned survey was complete, including the fourth resonance point. Other regions remained unmeasured, but they now had enough for a meaningful comparison.
"Yes," the Doctor said.
"Davan's comparative model between the first and second folds is approximately 60% complete. At current processing rate, the full comparison will be ready in three days."
"Good." He looked at the scanner — at the fold's entry zone, at the binary pair, at the vast open Spiral beyond. "What's next on the list?"
"The third fold site is twenty-two days from the second," MINO said. "The window opens in eleven weeks. There is time for the Vorath world visit and return before the third window."
Raven wanted to finish the Vorath survey. Their second visit had clarified the observer grammar without resolving the deeper layers.
"We're going back," the Doctor said. "It's already on the course."
The shared itinerary already showed the return. Davan had added the unresolved survey points beside it.
She looked at him.
He was at the primary console, writing in his notebook. He did not look up.
She smiled.
She went to stand beside him at the primary controls.
"You planned the Vorath visit before we entered the fold," she said.
"Yes."
"You knew we'd want to go back."
"I knew you would want to go back. And I wanted to go back. And Davan will want to go back — they found something in the secondary layer that they haven't finished with."
"So you just put it on the course."
"I put it on the course."
She looked at the navigation display for a moment. At the course: second fold exit, Vorath world, third fold approach. The shape of the next several weeks, already laid out.
Raven counted the unfinished work: the papers, the Vorath layers, the next fold, the Master's preparations, and the unknown watcher. Twelve more fold sites would remain after the third.
"Yes," he said.
"That's a long list."
He closed the notebook and asked whether she had somewhere else she wanted to go first.
She thought about the fold's interior. About the before and the after visible simultaneously. About the universe showing you its full shape rather than the partial view that forward-only time produced.
Davan had thirteen more folds to compare, if they chose to attempt all of them.
The Vorath survey markers were waiting where they had left them.
Yara would receive another report. The photograph stood beside the scanner.
"No," she said. "I don't."
The TARDIS lifted.
She entered transit without a jolt. The instruments settled on the new heading.
In the mapping room, Davan laid the two interior maps side by side. The asymmetric fourth resonance point remained highlighted. Already it was changing the questions they would ask at the third site.
Thirteen more remained beyond the two they had visited.
MINO monitored the Engine's stability indicators. Cal's equations still matched the measurements. The Yara Constant had held through the changes outside the Engine's pocket dimension.
Clean. Stable. Continuing.
The photograph on the TARDIS console. Raven and Yara in the centre, both looking at something outside the frame — the Doctor had looked at this photograph enough times to know the moment: they had been watching a bird, a specific kind of bird that did not exist on Earth and that had landed on the fence post beside the park bench in Caldris, and Ava had caught them both looking at it with the same quality of attention. Below the photograph, in Raven's handwriting: She was here. She was glad.
The console lights doing what they always did.
The Doctor and Raven at the primary console. Not working anything specific — the Vorath world was three days from the second fold site, the transit was underway, the next thing was not yet required. The notebook was open. The tea was made. The ship was where she was.
"The Vorath secondary layer," Raven said. "Davan's hypothesis is that it's addressed to someone in the primary reception point. To the observer, not just the observed."
"Yes."
"And if Yara is right, the subsequent layers address what it means to be the consciousness that perceives the probability weight. Not just to be the stabilising constant but to know that you are."
"Yes."
She looked at the scanner — at the transit field, at the open Spiral ahead. "The Vorath spent thousands of years observing something that the Engine documented over two thousand years and the fold showed in four months. All three of them arriving at the same understanding through different routes."
"The universe is consistent," he said.
"The universe is consistent." She looked at him. "That's the best thing about it."
He smiled, and she stayed beside him.
The TARDIS hummed.
Forward.
Ahead waited the unfinished translation and the next fold. Farther away, the Master was preparing; somewhere in the inner Spiral, the watcher had gone to work. None of it was settled.
